The latest film in the Marvel franchise, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” recently enjoyed an astounding, record-setting box office opening weekend, making it one of the biggest hits in modern cinematic history. The R-rated action comedy featured a Marvel universe crossover between two fan favorites, as demonstrated in the film’s title.
However, the film has generated substantial backlash from the LGBT community, who complained about the number of non-politically correct gay jokes that were made. For example, a critic from “The Guardian” wrote, “Same-sex attraction is thus treated as little more than a gag, neither fulfilled nor corrected by the film itself.”
The critic, Guy Lodge, further likened the jokes to “schoolyard homophobia” while claiming that Deadpool is a “pansexual.” Lodge added, “It’s a taunting akin to juvenile schoolyard homophobia, scarcely remedied by Deadpool himself being queer-identified. At this point, the next time Disney dredges up the character, it might be more progressive to draw less attention to his pansexuality. That, or simply let him f*ck Wolverine.”
Another upset critic suggested that the movie was “shockingly bad,” in part because of its “fratboy gay jokes.” They wrote, “I snuck away from Fantasia to check out DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE…and I wish I hadn’t. It’s shockingly bad – from the CGI blood to the fratboy gay jokes to the lack of stakes to the terrible villain (poor Emma Corrin!). It’s an unequivocal mess.”
Another person who watched the movie listed off their grievances with “Deadpool & Wolverine’s” references to homosexuality. “It really rubbed me the wrong way that deadpool referred to gay people as “the gays” in the new movie as if he isn’t queer himself. i hate how his queerness is only ever played as a joke and never once sincerely,” they said.
One X user complained about audiences finding the gay jokes humorous, writing in a post, “At the risk of getting too moralistic, it’s also a movie i think is sincerely homophobic, so the idea that people need to be more “normal” about the fact that general audiences are really getting a kick out of non-stop gay jokes during this cultural moment is very frustrating!”
Despite the negative reception from some members of the LGBT community toward the movie’s humor, “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a smashing box office hit. The American Tribune recently reported on the film’s record performance, in which the plot abstained from embracing a woke agenda like so many other major releases over the past few years.
According to reports, the film grossed approximately $211 million on its opening weekend, making it the highest-earning R-rated movie in cinematic history. Moreover, the impressive earnings ranked “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the sixth largest opening of all time behind some of the biggest films in modern entertainment history.
The movie has grossed roughly $444.3 million globally after three days of debuting in theaters. Variety reported that only a handful of other films have had higher earnings during their openings in the domestic box office. These titles include, “Avengers: Endgame” ($357 million), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($260 million), “Avengers: Infinity War” ($257 million), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($247 million) and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ($220 million).
