A man in Brooklyn allegedly went on a stabbing spree on Christmas Eve in Grand Central Terminal, where no bystanders felt compelled to step in to prevent the man from carrying out the violent attack on innocent victims. According to reports, 28-year-old Jason Sargeant has been accused of stabbing two people in separate attacks before finally being apprehended by police.
Reportedly, Sargeant faces a slew of charges such as assault, reckless endangerment, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and disorderly conduct. Furthermore, reports indicate that Sargeant has an extensive rap sheet including three prior arrests during one of which he assaulted a police officer.
Among the victims of the assault is 26-year-old Imani-Ciari Pizarro, who was attacked while face-timing her neighbor around 10 p.m. Recounting the horrific attack against her, she explained that she was “sucker punched” in the back of the head after which, she “blacked out.” Sargeant reportedly approached PIzarro, shouting “what’s your problem?” multiple times before stabbing her in the throat. However, instead of rushing to prevent the attack or aid Pizarro, witnesses “froze” and didn’t do anything while no police were present to assist the victim.
“I wish I could be able to travel to my livelihood and not be attacked. I wish there were cops in Grand Central when I was attacked, there were none. I was running for help and there was no one there,” Pizarro said. “There are usually cops in four different spots and I ran to each one of them but none were there.”
Further illustrating the diffusion of responsibility from the witnesses of the horrific attack, where no one helped her, Pizarro said, “No one called 911. No one in Grand Central called 911. It was my neighbor. I called my neighbor. I was on the phone with my neighbor when it happened and she called 911.”
“It’s not fair. We’re getting hurt every day. And there’s nothing I can do. I can’t protect myself. I’ve almost been assaulted two other times in the last two months by mentally ill people. I try to ignore them but they don’t like being ignored either,” Pizarro added, explaining how the attack against her was not merely a one-off incident.
Some have claimed witnesses, such as young and able-bodied men, are choosing not to step in and defend innocent women and children from violent attacks as they have been dissuaded from doing so by woke prosecutors and district attorneys. Some argue that trials such as Daniel Penny’s have disincentivized men from defending those who are vulnerable.
The American Tribune previously reported on testimony from Daniel Penny, describing the harrowing incident in which he decided to stand up and defend passengers of the New York City subway from Jordan Neely, who was behaving violently and aggressively toward those around him.
Penny said, “And Mr. Neely came on, he was, he was threatening. He’s, I’m six-two, and he was taller than me. So it was an, there’s a common misconception that Marines don’t get scared. We’re actually taught one of our core values is courage. And courage is not the absence of fear, but how you handle fear. And, you know, I was scared for myself, but I looked around I saw women and children he was yelling in their faces saying, saying these threats. I couldn’t just sit still.”
