Newborn Found Abandoned In Trash Can, Saved By Good Samaritan

A tragic story found itself with a happy ending after an unnamed Good Samaritan, a man, saved a newborn baby from its certain demise. After hearing a woman screaming, he peered out his window and witnessed a homeless woman giving birth. He then saw her cross the street and throw the baby in the garbage, causing the man to leap into action to save the newborn’s life.

The man asked to remain anonymous when talking to reporters about the harrowing scene, but he still found time to share the story of how the events transpired and to explain why he leaped into action. The events took place in Kahala, Hawaii, and were covered by the news outlet KHON2.

He began by describing the emotions that raced through his body as he saw what was transpiring on the sidewalk. He said, “It felt like a dream almost, a scary dream, like a nightmare… It was very sad, just very sad moment. That’s definitely scary to think about what would have happened if I wasn’t here.”

Fortunately, the “what-if” will never have to be answered as the man was there and made the decision to do what he thought was the right thing. At roughly 11:30 pm, the man was home alone. He explained, “Then got up and looked out the window. And then was shocked to see what I was seeing at first. Right over here, across the street, I witnessed a homeless lady giving birth to a child so I immediately picked up my phone called 911.”

Though he was overcome with “disbelief” and “shock,” the man gathered himself. The moment that he saw the woman put the baby in the trashcan and leave the scene, he went outside to help. He said of the situation, “I was able to just grab it out of the top of the trash and it didn’t look like it was really injured or anything. It was crying when I took it out of the dumpster, which is a good sign.”

The moment was heavy for the Good Samaritan, who couldn’t believe the depravity that he had just witnessed. After the rescue, he says that he let his emotions overcome him. “I broke down a little bit and started crying because I didn’t know how someone could just leave their kid like that.”

The story had a happy ending for the baby, who was given a second chance at life by the stranger who chose not to merely be a bystander on that evening. He said, “The last thing I heard the baby was in stable condition. I’m grateful to God that I was here home when this all happened so that I was able to get the kid in time to save its life. It could have turned out very different if I didn’t hear the screams and I wasn’t home.”

It says a lot about this man to thank God for giving him the opportunity to save the child. It was a hard moment, one that surely will have some ramifications in his head for a long time, but his unwavering faith and complete lack of selfishness were commendable on the day that he saved a life.
