Megan Rapino appears to have been replaced as the de facto woke champion on the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) by her younger teammate Alex Morgan. Morgan recently came out suggesting her squad refuse to play upcoming tournament games in Florida and Texas on account of their state’s policies on the issue of transgender athletes.
Outkick described the changing of the guard, as it were, since Rapino stepped down from the national team:
Move over Megan Rapinoe, there is a new woke queen on the U.S. women’s national soccer team, and her name is Alex Morgan. While she may be heterosexual and not have purple hair, those shouldn’t be a knock against her wokeness, she’s taken over the captain’s chair of the most-woke sports team in North America.
Just a week ago Morgan defended an op-ed written by her fellow woke teammate Becky Sauerbrunn about trans athletes in sports. Morgan supported Suerbrunn’s opinion that biological men should be allowed to compete against women. Specifically, Morgan believes trans kids should be able to compete against girls.
In her op-ed piece, Sauerbrunn repeatedly represented the idea that the issue was about being fair, yet failed to acknowledge the innate unfairness of permitting much larger and stronger athletes from dominating – and potentially hurting – their competition.
“I can’t stay quiet as transgender youth in my home state are targeted simply because they love sports as much as I do,” she wrote. “I want every young person to have the same opportunities I’ve had to live their best life, exactly as they are.
No one is advocating for kids to not play sports at all. In reality, so-called opponents of Sauerbrunn and Morgan focus their argument on what constitutes a safe and fair format for athletes. Is it fair that people born male compete against people born female?
Both common sense and fact patterns suggest otherwise. Countless stories relate the concerning trend that transgender women outcompete their female competition based on inherent advantages of muscle mass, strength, and physique. High school Connecticut runners have smashed records while sprinting their way to first place, and other events such as swimming, wrestling, and even professional mixed martial arts have likewise seen female athletes forced off the podium despite years of commitment and training.
Alex Morgan and her woke crowd are undeterred by such arguments. Speaking to The Athletic, she said that “[t]he inclusion of trans kids in sports is the inclusion of kids in sports. Everyone should have the ability to play sport. The fact that it’s being taken into politics is really sad. And I think it’s at the cost of trans kids’ life.”
“Looking at these games in Florida and Texas, respectively, we’re going to need to continue to step it up, and have internal discussions as well with the team, because we’re not ones to shy away from hard conversation or taking a stand for what’s right,” Morgan later said to reporters about the issue.
“Playing in Florida and Texas, that’s something that the team definitely needs to look at,” she added. “I think just even talking about it is good.”
Ironically, Morgan has repeatedly denounced those who disagree with her as politicizing the issue, but it’s hard to see how she’s also not getting political by suggesting state-wide boycotts over the hot-button topic. Is it only political when one side does it?
Outkick went on, noting that the issues facing Morgan could eventually impact her personally.
Morgan, for example, has a two-year-old daughter. Her daughter will be on a level playing field with boys her age for a handful of years, maybe even a full decade, but when these two things called biology and puberty kick in that boy she was once competing against quickly turns into a young man and it’s no longer an even playing field.
It’ll be interesting to see if Morgan still shares this mindset when her daughter is 15 years old competing against boys who are faster, stronger, and as a result, more dangerous to compete against.
