Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema recently provided testimony where she admitted to having sex with her then-married security guard while she was in office representing the people of Arizona, according to federal court filings. Heather Ammel, Matthew Ammel’s ex-wife, filed a lawsuit against the Democrat turned independent, who left the office at the beginning of 2025 for allegedly causing the break up of the 14-year marriage.
Heather Ammel sued Sinema in a North Carolina court under the state’s alienation-of-affection law. Sinema’s legal team has attempted to move the case to a federal court, then tried to have it tossed out there, where they attempted to make the case that Sinema’s relationship with Ammel happened outside of North Carolina and that the federal court lacked personal jurisdiction over her.
Sinema, who is single, stated in a deposition held on July 31, 2026, that the first time she engaged in sexual activity with Ammel was near Memorial Day 2024. “We were staying at an Airbnb in Napa, California. We were outside. Matt kissed me. We went inside and had sex,” Sinema went on to say in her deposition, which was held at a law office in Raleigh.
According to a report from Fox News, Sinema said she and Ammel weren’t staying at the property alone, but were joined by her friends, Penny and Grant Croissant, along with several other members of her security team. Sinema then said that both she and Ammel slept together again in June when she attended the wedding of CNN anchor Jessica Dean in the Big Apple.
The two had separate hotel rooms, but engaged in intercourse in Sinema’s room, she revealed during the deposition. A month later, the two had sex again, this time in her apartment located in Washington, D.C., after they took a red-eye flight from the West Coast. Then, in mid-August, Sinema and Ammel traveled to Aspen, Colorado, for a “fundraising trip,” where they had sex again.
Sinema was not able to recall having another sexual encounter with Ammel in D.C., in September, but Ammel confirmed it during his own deposition. The affair lasted until October 2024 when the two had sex yet again in Sinema’s house in Phoenix. The disgraced former senator acknowledged that she was aware that Ammel had three kids and was married during the time of their relationship.
During the deposition, an attorney asked Sinema about a photo she sent via text to Ammel of herself in a towel. “I’m an endurance athlete. So a photograph of me with cupping marks is about sports,” she said, claiming not to remember sending a photo of herself in a towel. In another message to Ammel, she wrote, “Putting my hand on your heart. I’ll see you soon. I miss you.”

“You understand, Ms. Sinema, don’t you, that a wife reading this might get concerned about who is sending her husband that kind of message referring to putting his — her hand on his heart? Can you see that?” the lawyer asked her. “Yes,” she replied. An evidentiary hearing has been set for August 19, 2026, according to court documents.
