A recent move from the Democratic Party in several crucial swing states could be great news for former President Donald Trump. According to recent reports, senate candidates in the battleground states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania are “distancing themselves” from Vice President Kamala Harris to save their political careers in tight Senate races.
Independent journalist Kyle Becker recently posted the news on X, noting that Democratic Senate candidates in these states are hoping to pull voters who support Trump in an attempt to take the lead in their respective races with razor-thin margins. “Democratic Senate candidates in key battleground states are distancing themselves from Kamala Harris in an attempt to attract Trump supporters as the 2024 election approaches,” Becker wrote.
“In Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Democrats are growing increasingly cautious about openly aligning with Kamala Harris due to her unpopularity,” he added, explaining that down-ballot Democrats do not want to be associated with the vice president for the sake of their election prospects. This could be a promising sign for Trump as it indicates voters in these states could favor the former president over Harris.
Furthermore, Becker cites instances in which these liberal candidates have even deployed similar messaging as Trump. “In Pennsylvania, Senator Bob Casey has given Trump-like messaging on China and supported some of Trump’s policies, such as tariffs. Internal polling shows Casey narrowly leading his Republican opponent, David McCormick, while Trump polls competitively with Harris in the Keystone State,” he continued.
Providing more examples, the journalist added, “In Wisconsin, Senator Tammy Baldwin similarly avoided embracing the administration during her debate, while her campaign revived ads touting legislation signed by Trump to protect American jobs. In Michigan, Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin has taken a similar approach, focusing on her bipartisan work and minimizing attacks on Trump, reflecting concerns that Harris is struggling in the key swing state.”
Becker concluded, asserting that many Democrats see Harris as a liability to their political careers, where such disunity within the party could improve Trump’s chances in the election. “As Election Day nears, these Democratic candidates are increasingly running on their own records and populist messaging rather than riding on Kamala Harris’ coattails. On the contrary, they are hoping that she doesn’t drag them down with her,” he said.
Users in the comments section also pointed out the Biden-Harris administration’s record, explaining why Democrats would not want to be associated with it. “Biden ~ Harris administration is breaking records! Highest level of homelessness in history. Highest level of illegal immigration in history. Highest inflation in 41 years! Highest national debt ever! These are some of the reasons why democrat candidates are distancing themselves from Kamala Harris!” they wrote.
“She hasn’t said one thing that would positively impact the average Americans life, and her whole slogan about a “New Way” – how can anyone take that seriously if she’s already advocated for the “Current Way” the last 4 plus years. Their priorities don’t align with middle America!” another person added in the comments section, echoing the same sentiment.
