Disney recently released the newest installment of the famous Indiana Jones series. However, the box office results are not looking great. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opened at the box office on Thursday night, bringing in somewhere between $6 and $7.5 million in revenue. Notably, this box office opening is worse than other recent film releases that completely flopped.
For context, The Flash‘s Thursday opening night brought in roughly $9.7 million in revenue. After three days at the box office, the film went on to gross $55 million. The Flash was slammed for being woke, particularly for hiring Ezra Miller as the main lead, who requests to be addressed with they/them pronouns.
Some regard The Flash as one of the biggest flops in recent history based on its abysmal opening. Dial of Destiny performed worse on its Thursday opening than this film, and its total box office opening is only projected to be approximately $65 million, which isn’t much better.
Compared to the coveted legacy of the Indiana Jones series, to say this opening is a disappointment is a vast understatement. For perspective, the 2008 release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull earned roughly $100 million in box office revenue in its first three days and $151 million over five days.
According to the best-case scenarios predictions, Dial of Destiny will earn somewhere in the ballpark of $100 million over its three-day opening. However, the worst-case scenario projections price the earnings in at somewhere near $80 million, a far cry from the past earnings of the Indiana Jones franchise.
Even extending the analysis to worldwide earnings, projections have the new film bringing in nearly $140 million throughout the opening weekend. For comparison, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opened up with $272 million over the same time frame.
The film’s producer, Kathleen Kennedy, has received substantial flack, being dubbed “talentless” and a “franchise killer.” She has been slammed for her role in recent franchises such as Star Wars and Willow, where some were disappointed. Many are worried a woke producer will ruin the newest Indiana Jones film. The early box office figures suggest just that.
The American Tribune recently reported on the overall financial struggles the Walt Disney Company is enduring with its latest films. According to the calculations of one box office analyst, Disney could have lost almost $900 million from eight of its recent box office releases.
YouTube Channel, Valliant Renegade, determined through his analysis that Disney has invested approximately $2.75 billion into its latest films while only bringing in roughly $1.86 billion in income from theatrical showings. Disney films have huge budgets for the production and marketing costs of the flagship movies. However, according to the analyst’s calculations, consumer demand is insufficient to provide profitability.
To make matters worse for Disney, Wall Street analysts have downgraded the company’s stock amid troubling financial performance. Analysts are concerned with stalling growth in the Disney+ streaming platform and weakening attendance at theme parks. Overall, the Walt Disney Company appears to be struggling across the board, and many blame it on a woke agenda embraced by the company.
