New information has come to light after a prominent Texas Republican was nearly killed in a horrific home invasion, which led to the tragic death of her husband. Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell, who served as the first black mayor of her city, is still fighting for her life after her grandson ambushed her in a gruesome knife attack.

As background, Bobbie Mitchell was a longtime Republican civil servant who held several prominent roles in the Denton, TX, municipal government. As both mayor and county commissioner, the Republican is known for her deep faith, community leadership, and large family.

In any case, the Lewisville Police Department issued an update on the story on its Facebook page on April 21, 2025. The department wrote, “This morning, at approximately 3:53 a.m., Lewisville Police Department officers responded to a report of an assault in progress in the 1000 block of Springwood Drive.
Upon arrival, officers located two adult victims—a male and a female—both suffering from apparent stab wounds.”

Revealing the suspect, the document said, “The suspect, a family member of the victims, was still on scene and was immediately taken into custody without incident. Lewisville Fire Department personnel rendered aid and transported both victims to area hospitals.”

Providing additional information about the victim, the Lewisville Police Department explained her background. They stated, “The female victim has been identified as Bobbie J. Mitchell, Denton County Commissioner for Precinct 3. Commissioner Mitchell currently serves the Lewisville area and is a prominent public servant. She is a former Lewisville City Council member and was the city’s first Black mayor, elected in 1993. She held the office until her resignation in January 2000 to run for her current county position.”

Explaining the condition of the victims, the police statement said, “Commissioner Mitchell is listed in stable condition and is being treated for stab wounds. Commissioner Mitchell’s husband, Fred Mitchell, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after 5:00 a.m.”

Concluding the release, the Police described the alleged murder. The document said, “The suspect, Mitchell Blake Reinacher, the grandson of the victims, has been booked into the Lewisville jail and is presently charged with Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The crime scene remains active as LPD crime scene investigators and detectives continue processing evidence and working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack.”

As we reported, Mitchell’s family issued a statement on the attack. They wrote, “Our precious mother is on the road to a full recovery. We are so very grateful for all the calls, texts, social media posts, news stories, flowers, notes, and so much more. And we appreciate those who have checked in on us.”

Wrapping up their remarks, the family said, “We humbly ask that all of you understand this is a process and one that will take some time as we navigate this situation. We completely understand everyone’s desire to see and visit our mother, but currently, we are limiting visitors to family. Again, thank you so very much. We are beyond blessed by all of you.”
