As the 2024 election nears, new polling is showing Republicans beginning to do a bit better in polling, something could lead to big results in the election itself given how Republicans have, in the past, typically underperformed in polling compared to actual election results. Amongst those areas where that is the case is the Ohio Senate race, where Republican candidate Bernie Moreno has taken the lead over Senator Sherrod Brown, the state’s longtime Democrat Senator.
The good news for Moreno comes alongside a slew of good news for former President Donald Trump, who has managed to race ahead in all of the swing states, something that is true even of the former Blue Wall in the northern Midwest, a major shift from the formerly pro-Democratic union area.
In any case, Ohio, once a swing state, is solidly red for Trump and MAGA and now even for the senate candidate, Bernie Moreno. In fact, the latest Morning Consult poll from the state has revealed that Mr. Moreno holds 47% support among likely voters. That is better by one point than Senator Brown, who now stands at 46%.
Adding to Moreno’s potential for victory is that he is a successful businessman, so he is able to capitalize well on the economic issue that is at play in this election and is a major weak point for Democrats in this election cyclegiven the inflation issue that has long plagued the Biden-Harris Administration.
Commenting on the results, Morning Consult said, “In the race for the Senate, Democratic incumbents maintain leads in most states that we’re tracking, but Sherrod Brown of Ohio now trails Republican challenger Bernie Moreno.” It added that there is good news for Republicans as well, saying, “The cycle’s most vulnerable Republican, Ted Cruz of Texas, has retaken the lead over his Democratic challenger.”
That isn’t just good news for Moreno, though it is. It is also a major and notable shift from the former poll, which occurred in mid-September. That poll had showed the incumbent, Sen. Brown, up by two points, so the current poll shows a three-point swing in the weeks before the election that is a major one for a longtime incumbent.
Further, the poll, in addition to being a major swing in opinion and bad news for an incumbent, is bad news for the Democratic Party. That is because the Democrat hold on the Senate is tenuous and a number of Senate races look good for the Republicans, so the swing of opinion toward Moreno could mean that their ability to hold onto the Senate is even more tenuous.
Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy took to X to cheer Moreno and call on Ohioans to vote for him in a post that Moreno retweeted, saying, “My ask for Ohio: 1. Vote Trump/Vance. 2. Vote @BernieMoreno. 3. Vote NO on Issue 1. If everyone who does #1 also does #2 and #3, we’ll save our country & protect Ohio at the same time. 🇺🇸”
Additionally, Moreno, sounding off on Sen. Brown on X, said, “Americans are sick of phony politicians like Kamala Harris and Sherrod Brown that repeat canned and rehearsed lines. They think they can hoodwink the country, but when they are subjected to even the slightest amount of scrutiny, they crumble.”
