The Justice Department revealed the results of its 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown in a press release published on its official government website, which brought about criminal charges against a total of 324 people, 96 of which were doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other licensed medical professionals. The total amount of fraud these individuals were busted for was over $14.6 billion.
The operation involved both federal and state law enforcement agencies across the United States and, according to the press release, “represents an unprecedented effort to combat health care fraud schemes that exploit patients and taxpayers.” The federal government seized over $245 million in cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and other assets as part of its efforts.
Along with the announcement of the successful fraud crackdown, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which is headed by Dr. Mehmet Oz, announced that it prevented over $4 billion in taxpayer dollars from being paid out to false or fraudulent claims. The CMS also revealed that it suspended or revoked the billing privileges of 205 providers in the months leading up to the operation.
According to the press release, the government announced that civil charges have been filed against 20 defendants for $14.2 million in alleged fraud, along with civil settlements with 106 defendants for a total of $34.3 million. Takedown was led by a partnership comprised of the Health Care Fraud Unit, which is part of the Justice Department and partners from the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Agents from these various agencies worked alongside federal and local law enforcement departments. The cases involving those apprehended for carrying out acts of fraud are being prosecuted by Health Care Fraud Strike Force teams, 50 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, and 12 State Attorneys General Offices. In other words, a lot of folks within the Trump administration are focused on eradicating fraud and preserving taxpayer dollars.
“This record-setting Health Care Fraud Takedown delivers justice to criminal actors who prey upon our most vulnerable citizens and steal from hardworking American taxpayers,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said about Takedown. “Make no mistake – this administration will not tolerate criminals who line their pockets with taxpayer dollars while endangering the health and safety of our communities.”
“As part of making healthcare accessible and affordable to all Americans, HHS will aggressively work with our law enforcement partners to eliminate the pervasive health care fraud that bedeviled this agency under the former administration and drove up costs,” Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of the Department of Health and Human Services stated concerning the importance of fraud elimination.

A user on social media platform X provided a detailed explanation for how the fraud was perpetrated and how the fraudsters were caught using AI: “They used AI to generate fake voice recordings of patients giving consent for medical equipment that was never delivered. Fake urinary catheters. Billed to your tax dollars. One single scheme accounted for $10.6 billion in fraudulent claims. That’s more than double the previous record,” user Felix Prehn said.
He went on to state in his post, describing the massive amount of proceeds of crime that the DOJ was able to recover, “The DOJ called it the largest healthcare fraud takedown in American history. They seized $245 million in cash, crypto, luxury cars, and other assets.”
