NBC reporter Kristen Welker has been called out for ” repeatedly lying” during a “Meet the Press” interview with former President Donald Trump. During the segment, Welker continually interrupted the pre-taped interview to provide false fact-checks that were not relevant to Trump’s claims. As Trump has geared up for his third bid at the White House, dubious “fact-checks” have become commonplace.
Writing about the interview in The Federalist, Mollie Hemingway stated that Kristen Welker “brazenly and repeatedly lied in a bizarre, conspiracy-laden debate with former President Donald Trump.” In one instance, Welker provided a false fact-check that there was no evidence that President Joe Biden had urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to indict Trump.
However, evidence has been extensively reported on showing Biden expressing frustration that there weren’t more efforts to prevent Trump from running for office. Furthermore, there was even a New York Times article from 2022 titled, “Garland Faces Growing Pressure as Jan. 6 Investigation Widens,” outlining how Biden was displeased with Garland not indicting Trump.
Furthermore, Trump brought up the Hunter Biden laptop scandal at another point during the interview. Welker interrupted this statement with a fact-check, which was not even relevant to Trump’s point, stating there was no evidence that Biden personally benefited from Hunter’s schemes. However, texts from Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop have surfaced indicating that he pays President Biden’s bills.
Welker further highlighted a wild conspiracy theory that claimed Trump had wrestled with a Secret Service agent in a vehicle on January 6, 2021. When brought up, Trump appeared shocked that Welker would even give credence to such a claim. “So you dispute that account?” Welker asked.
Trump fired back at the NBC reporter, “Dispute it? Who wouldn’t dispute it? She’s — the craziest account I’ve ever heard. You mean that I was in “The Beast,” and she said I was in “The Beast,” and the Secret Service didn’t want — so I took a guy who was like a black belt in karate and grabbed his neck and tried to choke him…” Welker asked, “What happened..” Trump then said, “How ridiculous.”
Moreover, Welker also made false statements regarding Democratic positions on abortion, contesting a claim from Trump that liberal politicians are pushing to allow abortion at virtually any point during pregnancy, even after birth. Welker claimed that Democrats are not taking this stance, despite many elected officials holding this view.
Trump said during the interview, “So you have Roe v. Wade, for 52 years, people including Democrats wanted it to go back to states so the states could make the right. Roe v. Wade — I did something that nobody thought was possible, and Roe v. Wade was terminated, was put back to the states. Now, people, pro-lifers, have the right to negotiate for the first time. They had no rights at all, because the radical people on this are really the Democrats that say, after five months, six months, seven months, eight months, nine months, and even after birth you’re allowed to terminate the baby…” Welker falsely claimed, “Mr. President, Democrats aren’t saying that. I just have to, Democrats are not saying that.”
