This morning, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold appeared on MSNBC, providing her opinion of the Supreme Court’s decision to keep Donald Trump on ballots nationwide. Griswold noted her “larger reaction of disappointment,” explaining her utmost disagreement with the court’s decision.
The American Tribune reported on the ruling from the nation’s highest court, which overruled the Colorado decision to remove Trump from the state’s ballot. The decision determined that, ultimately, Congress only had the authority to enforce Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, not individual states. Opponents of Donald Trump have claimed he violated the clause, referred to as the “Insurrection Clause,” during the Capitol protests on January 6, 2021.
Despite the Supreme Court’s conclusion, Griswold maintained that she believes Trump is still an “oath-breaking insurrectionist.” The secretary of state suggested that Trump remaining on the ballot poses a threat to the political process, where voters will have to “save our Democracy” come November.
“First and foremost, I would say it’s good that the court issued a decision. Americans have been voting all across the nation and early voting for in those Super Tuesday states, including here in Colorado. And Coloradans and Americans deserve to know whether Trump is a qualified candidate. My larger reaction is disappointment. I do believe that states should be able under our constitution to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists and ultimately, this decision leads open or leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation but we know that Congress is nearly nonfunctioning body. So ultimately, it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November,” she said.
The MBSNBC host asked Griswold about her thoughts that many American voters believe Trump is still qualified to be president, to which she stated that it is a “voter’s decision. The Colorado official then doubled down on the idea that Democracy and freedoms are at stake in the upcoming election.
Ultimately, that will be a voter’s decision. I think there is a lot of reason for voters to look really hard at this upcoming election and what we have seen in swing states, swing districts that in 2018 2020 and 2022 American voters have stepped up to safeguard American democracy. Look, this upcoming election has a will have a big impact on our fundamental freedoms. The idea that women should have control over our own bodies, the idea that our democracy should remain intact and some really basic agreement among Americans will be affected that miss upcoming election. What I hope for is that Americans pay really close attention and I am immensely hopeful and optimistic that again, democracy will remain intact and this country will have centuries ahead of us with a strong representation,” she continued.
Griswold was also asked whether she had confidence in the integrity of the Supreme Court following the overruling of her state’s ballot decision. She explained that, despite her disagreement, she would adhere to the court’s ruling.
“I would say as an office holder, it is my job to uphold the decision of the United States Supreme Court. And that’s why I have always said from the beginning of this litigation, that I’ll follow what the United States Supreme Court decides even if I disagree with them, which I do. I think the Supreme Court has issued bad decisions on democracy. I think what’s happening in this country for American women is horrendous. The idea that the overturning of roe is leading to women, not even they have been able to access fertility treatment in the state of Alabama. And overall, again, the United States Supreme Court decision what will not be the make it or break it as to whether our democracy survives, but make it or break it will be the American people. And that’s who I have the utmost confidence and trust in doing this court is partisan,” she added.
