Perhaps former President Donald Trump did learn from the personnel mistakes made in his first term as president and is now ready to start staffing the government with MAGA men and women if and when he makes it back into office.
That, at least, is the implication of a recent claim about Trump and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a fighter for the MAGA movement if ever there was one. If a New York Times journo can be believed: Trump has had “repeated” discussions with her about her being his VP.
That came out when New York Times Magazine journalist Robert Draper appeared on the Daily Beast’s “The New Abnormal” podcast, and claimed that Trump has been having “repeated” discussions with Rep. Greene about her being his VP, though he’s been having those conversations with others as well. In Draper’s words:
“It’s been discussed repeatedly,” he said, per the Daily Beast. “Now, to be fair, I mean, how many of these conversations has Trump had with other people?”
Further, when speaking to li Velshi on MSNBC, Draper said that Trump is attracted to the idea of Rep. Greene being his running mate because of her loyalty to him. In his words:
“What Greene possesses that Trump so craves is loyalty. She has always been there for Trump. She has always had his back. After [Trump’s] experience with his last running mate, Mike Pence, it’s clear that he’s going to prize loyalty above all else,”
Draper apparently got those details from an interview with Rep. Greene for his upcoming book, “Weapons of Mass Delusion: When the Republican Party Lost Its Mind” . When being interviewed, Rep. Greene added that her being on the ticket is the opposite of what the GOP Establishment wants, saying:
“I think the last person that the RNC or the national party wants is me as his running mate.”
And even if Trump ends up settling on someone else for the Vice President slot, MTG could still be involved at a high level in his administration: according to a recent Rolling Stone report, he plans on sticking her in a top-level Justice Department position. That article claims:
“Wouldn’t she be great?” Trump privately said earlier this year to a confidant, one of the two people says. It is unclear what specifically Trump has in mind for the severely MAGAfied Georgia Republican, be it a White House staff position, cabinet post, or agency appointment, the sources say. But, “he loves MTG and would want her very close in a second term, that much was clear,” one source says.
The second source recalls that over the past year, the ex-president had briefly mentioned Greene’s name as someone who could be in the running to be a senior official at the Justice Department during a second Trump administration.
So who knows where MTG will end up. Could be as a “Milquetoast Mike” Pence replacement, could be in a DOJ slot from which she can deal with the FBI and other apparatchiks, or could be somewhere else. Time will tell.
