Democrats have recently attempted to criticize the Republican Party for supposedly failing to support funding for children’s cancer research. In the latest example of this rhetoric, MSNBC reporter Sam Stein claimed in a social media post that the GOP had prevented thwarted funding for the research amid the contested government spending bill.
“But some of the hardest cuts to swallow involved medical research,” Stein recently claimed. “In particular, advocates say, the revised funding bill delivered a devastating blow to the fight against pediatric cancer. The slimmed-down version was stripped of language that would have allowed children with relapsed cancer to undergo treatments with a combination of cancer drugs and therapies. (Currently the Food and Drug Administration is only authorized to direct pediatric cancer trials of single drugs.)”
The MSNBC reporter further noted, “The bill also didn’t include an extension of a program that gave financial lifelines, in the form of vouchers, to small pharmaceutical companies working on rare pediatric diseases. It was also missing earlier provisions that would have allowed for kids on Medicaid or CHIP—that is, poor children—to access medically complex care across state lines.”
However, as other Democrats have been fact-checked on this matter, Stein was confronted with the fact that Republicans already passed a standalone bill for pediatric cancer research earlier this year. Notably, Senate Democrats failed to bring the bill to a vote, suggesting that the left has actually was unable to advance children’s cancer research.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck pointed out this fact in a recent post to X. “Why are you leaving out that the Republican House already passed a standalone bill for pediatric cancer research that Dems in the Senate have refused to pass all year?” Starbuck wrote. Why are the Dems using kids with cancer in an attempt to force through a bill filled with pork.”
The American Tribune reported on another incident in which another prominent Democrat was fact-checked after claiming House Republicans were hindering children’s cancer research after fighting a last-minute 1500-page spending bill that would also advance their agenda.
Speaking to CNN reporter Manu Raju, Rep. Jeffries claimed, “Republicans are marching America into a painful government shutdown that will crash the economy and hurt working-class Americans because they would rather enact massive tax cuts for their billionaire donors, cancer research for children.” After the clip has been shared across X, key context was to his comments.
X’s Community Notes stated underneath the post,”The children’s cancer research issue is moot. The Senate has passed the “Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0″, which House passed in March 2024. It’s now headed to POTUS for signature. Since it passed House in Mar, it didn’t need to be in any of the House Dec CR’s.” Conservatives on social media have also responded to these attacks from Democrats.
Libs of TikTok posted on X, “You literally can’t make this up. Democrats are blaming @elonmusk, Trump, & Republicans for k*lling the funding for kids cancer research. It was introduced as a stand alone bill and passed the Republican controlled House. It’s been held up since March in the Democrat controlled Senate led by Chuck Schumer. Why are Democrats blocking funding for kids cancer research??”
