Mom Shopping at Target Hospitalized After Teens Pull TikTok “Bucket Challenge” Prank

The social media platform TikTok is one of the most popular apps in the world, with users infinitely scrolling through short video clips of their favorite content.  Aside from destroying the attention span of the youth and addicting them to the infinite scroll of content, TikTok has birthed a variety of different trends in which users can partake.

One of the most recent TikTok challenges going viral is known as The Bucket Challenge, which involves placing a bucket over an unsuspecting person’s head.  Gamerant described the social media trend:

For those who may not have heard of the bucket prank (also known as the bucket challenge), it involves the prankers filming themselves inside a store and placing a bucket or shopping basket over the heads of unsuspecting shoppers to get their reactions. This is not to be confused with the ice bucket challenge of years gone by in which participants would douse themselves with a bucket of ice-cold water. As one might expect, this newest TikTok trend is controversial since the targets of the prank aren’t always consenting.

However, this challenge recently hospitalized a California mom who was shopping in a Target where a group of teenage boys pulled the prank on her.  Comic Sands reports:

According to The Los Angeles Times and FOX station KTTV, Lana Clay-Monaghan was shopping in the baby section of the Target in Tustin, California on Sunday when the bucket was suddenly placed over her head.

Clay-Monaghan, in an interview with KTTV, said the last thing she remembers before passing out is asking the boys for help while they laughed.

The Tustin Police Department is actively investigating the incident as assault and battery.  Allegedly, four teenage boys were involved in the prank in an attempt to gain clout on social media.  They are believed to be local and to have walked or used public transportation. According to the press release:

The Tustin Police Department is aware of several social media posts regarding an assault that took place yesterday at Target in The District. TPD is actively investigating this case and we wanted to clarify several questions we have received. Here are several preliminary facts that have been reported to us:

On Sunday, March 26, 2023, at approximately 2:45 p.m., four male juveniles entered Target and began walking around. Several minutes later one of them picked up a bucket and placed it over the head of an adult female shopper. Several seconds later the juveniles are seen fleeing the store. As a result of the incident, the female shopper likely fainted and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and a police report was taken.

It is likely the juveniles were attempting to replicate the current social media trend where they place a bucket on a stranger’s head and film their reaction. There is no current threat to the community.

Tustin Police Department detectives immediately began investigating this case and are asking anyone who may have more information about this incident to please contact Detective Schaller at (714) 573-3245 or [email protected].
