Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, a conservative, recently discussed whether he would consider stepping down from his position. In two separate instances, Roberts clarified that he would only step down from his office if declining health made him unable to continue in his role.

For context, the Supreme Court is one of the most hotly contested parts of the government, and both parties meticulously plan their nominees and attempt to schedule retirements for when their party controls the White House. Trump nominated a historic three justices, and some have wondered if he will have the opportunity to select a fourth.

Despite being nominated by a Republican administration, Justice Roberts is a controversial figure among Trump supporters. Many view him as too eager to compromise with Democrats and as having an uncertain vote on many vital issues.

In any case, Roberts clarified his intentions in a May 7 interview with Forbes. The segment began with the host asking the SCOTUS justice, “So some of your colleagues have retired. You ever think about that? I mean, you’re too young now, but someday, would you [step down?]”

Answering back confidently, Roberts said he wasn’t going anywhere. The judge said, “You know, I’m going out feet first. It’s just I am too ..I say that now. I mean, I’m sure it’s your health declines and all you reckon, if you recognize that you’re a burden to the court rather than part of an asset to everybody, then you know it’ll be time to go.”

Reassuring the audience that he was aware of the complications of aging, he said, “I have very good friends who were for a long time, many years. And I sat down with them, and, you know, said, “I want to know, the appropriate time,” because you don’t always notice that you’re slipping. I want the, you know, two of you, to tell me if it’s it’s time to go. It’s a long pause, and at once the two of them said it’s time to go,” joking, “So I said, All right, never mind.”

Speaking to the problem of again judges, Roberts said that it’s rarely an issue. The SCOTUS justice declared, “It is surprising how rare it has been on the court for that to become an issue, really just a handful of times. I think it’s because it’s a collegial, both in a technical sense and in a popular sense, group of people that you develop relationships where, if the people do come, there have been times when somebody has stayed longer than they should, then the other colleagues come, and it’s always really worked out.”

Concluding his remarks, Justice Roberts put to bed the rumors of his retirement, saying, “So I don’t think that’s going to be a problem, but it is. I mean, I still feel pretty healthy. …It’s exciting to get up, you know, every morning and go into work.”
