Mike Johnson Hints at What Big Move Trump Could Try Next after Meeting with Him

In several sweeping promises, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has vowed to pass Trump’s comprehensive economic bill, allowing the president to sign it into law on July 4th. Johnson made his promise to the press and sent a strongly worded letter to House Republicans encouraging them to get on board.

For context, Trump has tasked lawmakers with identifying nearly $1.5 trillion in spending cuts to offset his ambitious tax restructuring, which includes eliminating the social security tax and tips. In addition, if lawmakers fail to extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) as enacted by Trump, it could result in massive tax hikes for ordinary Americans.

In any case, Johnson promised, “We are on track to pass the bill out of the House. As we’ve said from the very beginning, and get it over, to the next stage by Memorial Day.” Speaking of the president, he added, “He says July 4 because that’s a big, big birthday for us. And everybody knows that,” Johnson said of Bessent’s comments. “But I think – and I hope, and believe – that we can get it done sooner than that.”

Adding teeth to his promise, Speaker Johnions sent a letter to House Republicans on April 5, 2025. The document stated, “More than a year ago, the House began discussing the components of a reconciliation package that will reduce the deficit, secure our border, keep taxes low for families and job creators, reestablish American energy dominance, restore peace through strength, and make government more efficient and accountable to the American people.”

Continuing to lay out instructions, he provided a roadmap for the ambitious bill. He declared, “We are now one step closer to achieving those goals. Today, the Senate passed its version of the budget resolution. Next week, the House will consider adopting the Senate’s amendment to the House resolution, which will allow us to finally begin the most important phase of this process: drafting the reconciliation bill that will deliver on President Trump’s agenda and our promises to the American people.”

Concluding the letter, Johnson wrote, “With the debt limit X-date approaching, border security resources diminishing, markets unsettled, and the largest tax increase on working families looming, time is of the essence,” adding, “As President Trump said, ‘Every Republican, House and Senate, must UNIFY.” The American people are counting on us, and failure is not an option. Let’s get this job done!”

As Johnston quoted, Trump urged Republicans to pass the bill. He posted to Truth Social, “Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have been working tirelessly on taking the next step to pass the plan for our ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL, as it is known, as well as getting us closer to the Debt Extension necessary to continue our great work.”

Winding down his comments, the president stated, “The Senate Budget plan gives us the tools that we need to get our shared priorities done, including certain PERMANENT Tax Cuts, Spending Cuts, Energy, Historic Investments in Defense, Border, and much more. We are going to cut Spending and right-size the Budget back to where it should be. The Senate Plan has my Complete and Total Support. Likewise, the House is working along the same lines. Every Republican, House and Senate, must UNIFY. We need to pass it IMMEDIATELY!”
