Democrats have been sounding alarms for weeks about the surging popularity of Republicans as we head into November.
A new poll from the Wall Street Journal determined that if the elections were held today, Republicans would have an advantage over Democrats, 46% to 44%.
This indicates a massive shift in momentum for the GOP as in August the same poll indicated that Democrats held a 3-point advantage at that time.
The favor voters hold toward Republicans reflects that the economy has become the primary issue voters are prioritizing. According to polling, 81% of voters have said the economy will play a major role in their voting decision. In addition, 80% said that inflation would be the same magnitude of importance.
According the WSJ, views of the economy have been worse than at any point in the past year, which is very inconvenient timing for the Democrats. The polling found that only 19% say the economy is heading in the right direction, while 71% say the economy is on the wrong track. Moreover, most participants in the poll indicate that Biden’s economic leadership has had a negative impact, closely matching his overall job disapproval as president.
It’s no secret that Democrats have completely dropped the ball with the economy as we have had two consecutive quarters of economic growth, historically indicating the presence of a recession. When Biden came into office, he completely ignored the signs of economic trouble ahead.
Biden was handed a burning hot economy with inflation creeping around the corner, but all the administration did was claim it would be transitory while they pushed exorbitant stimulus packages, which are inflationary. Most recently, when inflation has been at historically high levels for months, they decided to fight fire with fire through even more spending under the “Inflation Relief Package”. Anyone with a basic understanding of economics knows government spending has an inflationary effect.
Perhaps what people have noticed the most, are the absurd increase in gas prices. Now this does have a lot to do with global oil markets, however, Biden’s domestic energy policies have squandered U.S. energy independence we once had under Trump. Canceling the Keystone Pipeline, suspending drilling leases on public land, and increasing regulatory power of the EPA are just a few of the policies that have contributed to the increase in prices at the pump.
Ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned, Democrats have seized that opportunity as their primary issue to run on for the midterms. They have made promises that if they seize control of Congress, the filibuster will be eliminated and Roe v. Wade would be codified into law. However, this issue has taken a backseat for voters due to the impacts of the economy.
Other issues around the country that have become more of a focal point to voters are illegal immigration and high crime rates. Both of these are issues that voters favor Republicans at mitigating. This makes sense when Democrats seemingly refuse to acknowledge the border crisis and take “soft-on-crime” policy stances.
Republicans are prioritizing the problems that Americans care about and it is showing in the polls.
