Michelle Obama has received backlash for recent comments criticizing America for not sufficiently supporting Vice President Kamala Harris. The former first lady hit the campaign trail on behalf of Harris in a last-ditch effort to bolster support for the struggling Democratic presidential candidate with the Obama last name.
Obama claimed that “America is always disappointing” Harris, voicing disbelief that the race between her and former President Donald Trump is even remotely close. Instead of conceding that Harris is not the best choice of candidate, rather the former first lady suggested that America is racist and sexist for not standing behind the vice president.
“I gotta ask myself, why on earth is this race even close?” Michelle asked the audience. “I lay awake at night wondering what in the world is going on. And it’s clear to me that the question isn’t whether Kamala is ready for this moment because by every measure, she has demonstrated that she’s ready. The real — the real question is, as a country, are we ready for this moment?”
In other comments on the Michigan stage, Obama further voiced her frustration with the current state of the race. The former first lady made dubious accusations against Trump, claiming he is suffering from “mental decline” while asserting that Harris is supposedly “dazzling” voters. Obama also said that Trump doesn’t have the “courage” to do interviews, despite him just sitting down with Joe Rogan for three hours, an interview which Harris refused.
“I hope that you will forgive me if I’m a little frustrated that some of us are choosing to ignore Donald Trump’s gross incompetence while asking Kamala to dazzle us at every turn. I hope that you will forgive me if I’m a little angry that we are indifferent to Donald Trump’s erratic behavior. His obvious mental decline, his history as a convicted felon, a known slumlord, a predator found liable for sexual abuse. All of this while we pick apart Kamala’s answers from interviews that he doesn’t even have the courage to do,” Obama said.
Conservative social media users reacted to the interview, criticizing Obama for her comments. “No matter who you bring out, you’re not going to win. People see the destruction this administration has brought. They know everything was better under Trump. You’re losing so many minorities and swing voters, there’s no way you’ll pull this out. You should just retire now. Nobody likes you, except the Blue No Matter Who lemmings. They’re the OG cult,” one person commented underneath Kamala HQ’s post.
Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly also weighed in on Obama’s last ditch effort to prop up Harris as she battles for the swing state. “Expecting Kamala to “dazzle” us? What we want is for her to spit out two coherent sentences that reflect ANY evidence – any at all – of a deep thinking, considered, authentic person,” she wrote on X.
Chief Political Analyst for Fox News Channel, Brit Hume, similarly wrote, “Poor Michele. America is always disappointing her.” Hume was ostensibly referencing comments Michelle made during her husband’s presidential campaign in which she suggested it was the first time in her adult life that she was proud of the United States.
