In a breaking post to Truth Social, President Donald Trump announced a major victory in the ongoing trade negotiations with Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. Trump secured significant concessions following the “very successful” call, which include a 25% tariff on cars as well as 50% on aluminum, steel, and copper.
For context, Mexico has agreed to end non-tariff restrictions on US imports. The deal, which is set to apply for 90 days, is a significant step towards a permanent agreement that addresses long-running issues like drug and human trafficking. Closing out the vital announcement, Trump thanked the diplomats and officials who helped to author the deal and promised that the two nations would cooperate on securing the southern border.
Such was shown when the president took to Truth Social on July 31, 2025, to announce the major shift. He began by explaining how he was able to build a relationship with the Mexican President, saying, “I have just concluded a telephone conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, which was very successful in that, more and more, we are getting to know and understand each other.” Despite their differences, Trump was able to build a bridge and sign an America-First trade deal.
Immediately, the President shifted into a comprehensive discussion of the features that make a deal with Mexico more complicated than other trade deals. He also dug into the specifics of the tariffs charged on Mexican goods in exacting detail. Trump declared, “The complexities of a Deal with Mexico are somewhat different than other Nations because of both the problems, and assets, of the Border. We have agreed to extend, for a 90 Day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time, namely, that Mexico will continue to pay a 25% Fentanyl Tariff, 25% Tariff on Cars, and 50% Tariff on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper.”
Next, Trump chronicled the concessions he was able to extract from the Mexican government, proving his ability as a leader and negotiator. The president stated, “Additionally, Mexico has agreed to immediately terminate its Non Tariff Trade Barriers, of which there were many. We will be talking to Mexico over the next 90 Days with the goal of signing a Trade Deal somewhere within the 90 Day period of time, or longer. ”
Winding down his remarks, the president catalogued the government officials who helped close this historic trade deal. Trump recounted, “Present at the meeting were Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, United States Trade Representative and Ambassador Jamieson Greer, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, and United States Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller.”
Concluding his post, President Trump promised to continue to increase cooperation between the two governments to secure the US-Mexico border. Trump posted, “There will be continued cooperation on the Border as it relates to all aspects of Security, including Drugs, Drug Distribution, and Illegal Immigration into the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
