A beer brand from Mexico is letting it be known that they are not big fans of President Donald Trump by delivering him a message in its newest commercial. The message? “Trump can go f**k himself.” The line appears in a video recapping the Tecate “Gulf of Mexico Bar” ad campaign, which mocks the president’s decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The creative team behind the ad took real news footage surrounding the renaming and mixes it with reactions from consumers in Mexico. One woman in the ad wisecracks, “Make Cerveza Great Again,” while someone else gives a much more blunt message to the president. Taking things even further, Tecate anchored down a floating bar in the Gulf and then made sure it showed up on Google Maps.
Google removed it multiple times, but they kept on putting it back up. Tecate then released a limited-edition beer brewed with water taken from the Gulf. In May 2026, the campaign brought home four Grand Clios at the Clio Awards, with executives from beer-maker Heineken publicly praising the commercials. It’s worth noting that Heineken is Tecate’s parent company, and is also offering pushback against the tariffs being placed on Mexican beer.
According to a report from The Daily Caller, a letter dated May 15 was sent to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, trying to convince him that tariffs would also have devastating effects on the U.S. economy. Marta Garcia, Heineken’s vice president of marketing, described the campaign as an attempt to celebrate Mexican identity and heritage.
“This is what Tecate is all about: a Mexican beer that not only celebrates Mexican identity, but also, when necessary, reaffirms it—with the best of Mexico: its great beer and its creativity,” García went on to say. “In less than a month, Tecate created a new beer and launched it in a bar in the middle of the Gulf, with the sole purpose of supporting and reminding Mexicans to feel proud of their heritage.”
Trump supporters wasted no time in getting together online and organizing a boycott of the beer brand, just like they did with Bud Light after it created an ad campaign featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. User Betty Boop on X responded to the commercial in a post that read, “Who drinks Tecate unless you’re at a s**t resort in Mexico?”
“Let’s give them the Bud Light treatment,” another user said in the comment section. Someone else wrote, “Bye-bye Tecate. You just Bud-Lighted yourself. Kick rocks.” Another commenter wrote, “Well that’s a dumb move, alienate a giant customer base when there’s so many other options.” User Pdubz alluded to a boycott of the beer, writing, “Patriots know what to do!”

Mexican beer isn’t great, but the Heineken-owned ones are consistently the worst,” another user explained in his reply. “Someone didn’t learn the Bud Light lesson,” another person said.
