Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly recently sounded off on the movie “Conclave,” which received a slew of nominations at the Golden Globes awards and is expected to receive critical acclaim at the Academy Awards. Kelly slammed the film as “the most disgusting anti-Catholic film I have seen in a long time,” revealing the nature of its plot.
As background, “Conclave,” which is based on the novel by Robert Harris, depicts and intense power struggle from within the Vatican over the selection of a new pope, in which Ralph Fiennes plays the cardinal in charge of the papal conclave. However, the plot features a bizarre intersex plot twist that has sparked controversy and criticism online.
Taking to X, Kelly wrote, “Just made the huge mistake of watching the much-celebrated “Conclave” & it is the most disgusting anti-Catholic film I have seen in a long time. Shame on Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci & John Lithgow for starring in it & shame on director Edward Berger (among others). “Spoiler:” They make THE POPE INTERSEX!”
She continued in her criticism of the film, “This is the big exciting twist at the end. I wish I had known so I wouldn’t have watched it. There are almost no redeeming characters in the movie – every cardinal is morally bankrupt/repulsive. The only exception of course is the intersex pope (who – surprise! – has female reproductive parts) & the cardinal who keeps her secret – bc of course that kind of Catholic secret-keeping must be lionized.”
Kelly argued that the film is just another example of how Western, post-Christian society has increasingly adopted a hostile position toward Christendom, noting that Islam would never be treated in such a manner. “I’m disgusted. What a thing to release to streaming just in time for Christmas. They would never do this to Muslims, but Christians/Catholics are always fair game to mock/belittle/smear,” she concluded.
Prominent Catholic leader Bishop Robert Barron reacted to the film in November in which he gave his critical synopsis of the film. Barron’s review blasted the film as a secular critique of conservative Christian values that “checks practically every woke box.” He wrote on X, “Just saw “Conclave.” If you are interested in a film about the Catholic Church that could have been written by the editorial board of the New York Times, this is your movie.”
He continued, “The hierarchy of the Church is a hotbed of ambition, corruption and desperate egotism, Conservatives are xenophobic extremists and the liberals are self-important schemers. None can escape this irredeemable situation. The only way forward is the embrace of the progressive buzz words of diversity, inclusion, indifference to doctrine, and the ultimate solution is a virtue signaling Cardinal who takes the Papal name of Innocent and who is a biological female. Since it checks practically every woke box, I’m sure it will win a boatload of awards, but my advice is to run away from it as fast as you can.”
