Mathew McConaughey has been all over the entertainment news recently. The 53-year-old actor likely will be a major player in another Yellowstone spin-off, as Taylor Sheridan is tapping the likable star for the next entry in his highly acclaimed show.
Now, in a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera with his buddy Woody Harrelson, McConaughey revealed that he stumbled upon reason to believe that he and Harrelson may actually be half brothers.
It wouldn’t be shocking, because the two actually look alike and have been lifelong friends, but while having a conversation with his mother, she let a potential cat out of the proverbial bag. McConaughey had this to say: “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families,” McConaughey said. “And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
Perhaps that was a hint, or perhaps Woody and Matthew were reading too much into her voice inflection. Possibly the latter until they started doing the math and putting the puzzle pieces together. When they started to examine the timeline, it started to look like way more than a coincidence. McConaughey went on to say:
“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce,”
“Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment,”
Matthew McConaughey thinks Woody Harrelson could be his actual biological brother.
This all stems from a revelation that McConaughey’s mother knew Harrelson’s father, perhaps intimately. They are yet to do a DNA test to confirm or deny.

Does this necessarily mean that the two actors share a mother? Of course not, but when you consider the two have been inseparable for years, and often mistaken for one another in childhood pictures, the evidence seems to point in a certain direction. The veteran actor continued: “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line,” McConaughey said. “And that’s part of our bromance, right?”
“My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew,” he said. “And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.
There is one sure way to settle the issue. A DNA test would put the matter to rest, but what fun is that? Harrelson’s dad died serving a double life sentence in prison, so his lineage, at least from his father’s side is already a broken mess. For McConaughey, not so much. He apparently is in no hurry to find out if there are family skeletons lurking in the closet. He told Ripa: “Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him?” McConaughey said. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
