Mariah Carey took the stage at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards to show the world it is finally Christmas time. She took the stage in a Christmas-themed outfit, complete with dancers in red sweaters and a warm Christmas landscape plastered to the stage behind her. With her iconic performance, it is officially time to get the Christmas music going.
Carey took the stage to share her record-breaking Christmas song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” with the hundreds of celebrities in attendance and the thousands of fans who watched along at home. This song has become synonymous with Christmas, and to many Americans, including myself, hearing it blasting over the television set is enough to say that it is time to get in the Christmas Spirit.
Carey was sticking to the winter theme, performing on a snow-covered set as she was carried to the stage by a ski lift. Her twin children, fathered by Nick Cannon, were also nearby. They danced along as mom kicked off the holiday festivities in style.
Carey didn’t leave the show empty-handed. She won the Billboard Chart Achievement Award to celebrate the long-standing dominance that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has held in the winter months. While her performance will certainly go down as an all-time great, her acceptance speech was also noteworthy.
Carey said, “Billboard has been an integral part of my life for a very long time now. Even though I don’t acknowledge time, I kind of have to admit that some of my most memorable times in my career are connected to Billboard and the BBMAs.
“One thing I really have to say that I’m really grateful for is the fact that my fans have been here with me through the hits, through the misses, the No. 1s and the Bubbling Unders.”
She continued, “This award is particularly special to me because the song itself changed my entire life. When I first sat down to write ‘All I Want Christmas Is You,’ I never could have imagined I would be standing here three months later accepting a special award for it, OK?”
She concluded her speech, saying, “I’m so honored to be receiving this award for this little song’s chart achievements, but the greatest achievement for me, is being here with all of you and feeling the love that only music can generate. Thank you so much!”
So, there you have it, folks. Christmas time is upon, and it came maybe a little bit sooner than expected this season. With Thanksgiving just days away, we have already been thrust into a mood of giving. I, for one, have Christmas music blasting all throughout the house.
Once the Christmas music cat has been taken out of the bag, there is no going back until the clock strikes midnight on December 25th. So, we may as well just embrace the tunes that we will all be hearing for the next month. Merry Christmas!
