Lee Wilson, a farmer in Pratt, Kansas, came up with one of the most extravagant and beautiful ways to celebrate his wife on their 50th wedding anniversary. Lee decided to show his appreciation for his wife Renee changing the crop that he plants this year, filling his property with swathes of Sunflowers for her to look at every time she sees the fields.
“Well we’re celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary August 10th and you know what’s a guy get his gal for the 50th,” Lee asked according to KAKE. “And I put a lot of thought into it and she always liked sunflowers. And I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers so I planted her 80 acres of sunflowers.”
And plant sunflowers he did. He didn’t just stop at a few hundred or even a few thousand sunflowers. He wanted to leave no doubt that he went above and beyond with his gift commemorating this amazing milestone that the couple had reached. When asked how many sunflowers he planted, Lee replied, “There’s about 1.2 million sunflowers in this field.”
Woah! Lee managed to secretly plant that field in the Spring, keeping the gift under wraps until the flowers began to bloom. If you were wondering, the field of flowers was a smash hit in Renee’s eyes, who said, “It made me feel very special. It couldn’t have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers.”
If you thought that his love story couldn’t get any sweeter, Lee also shared with KAKE the story of how the couple met. “We met in high school. She couldn’t date until she was 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday and that’s when we started dating. Our first date was a roller skating party, an FFA roller skating party in Harper Kansas.”
According to AMRA Farms, these sunflowers will not only be a good gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. They will also be making a little bit of money following the harvest of the sunflower seeds. While the corp certainly shouldn’t be relied upon to keep a family farm afloat, it is described as a good plant to grow during the offseason.
So gentlemen take notes. Lee Wilson managed to find a gift for his wife that not only made her extremely happy but will also likely result in a financial gain when all is said and done. Lee has officially cracked the code for gift-giving in a marriage. This is a real win-win as far as I am concerned.
The only real fear, and hopefully Lee considered this, is that the bar may be set too high on future gifts. But, judging from the interview, Renee Wilson seems to be content with this gargantuan gift being a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.
