Speaking on Friday, August 30, during the broadcast of his evening “Real Time” show on HBO, show host and podcast host Bill Maher sounded off on both Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, snapping that both did horribly and were insulting to his intelligence in the short CNN interview released that week.
As background, after over a month of avoiding the press, something that some on the left have said is a good idea given her tendency for gaffes and verbal errors, Vice President Harris finally agreed to do and interview. That was with CNN’s Dana Bash. However, it wasn’t a normal, much less difficult interview. For one, Harris brought along Walz for no clear reason. Further, it was short and pre-recorded. And, of course, it was with the relatively friendly to Harris Dana Bash.
Still, Harris did horribly. Many of her answers were, despite the time she had to prepare and the pre-recorded nature of the interview, rambled mounds of nonsense that were much more like her usual sort of nearly nonsensical word salad than any sort of legitimate answer that answered the question well and informatively.
So, Maher tore it to pieces on his program. saying that the numerous false statements and rambling inanities that both VP Harris and Gov. Walz spewed were “insulting [to his] intelligence.” That came when he was ridiculing Gov. Tim Walz’s claim that he just speaks the way that normal Americans speak and that’s why he insinuated that he had seen combat.
Maher said, making that point, “No, you don’t. You’re a huge liar, like all politicians are,” Maher reacted. “I don’t give a s— what you did during the Iraq War. You were in the Guard– I don’t understand why they just can’t–” Then, after breaking off, Maher got to the part about it being an insult, saying, “They’re just insulting my intelligence.”
He added, contrasting Harris with President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race and threw his support behind VP Harris after his debate night with former President Donald Trump went horribly, “I don’t know why we ever thought she was as bad as people thought she was. It was like Biden had that one bad night, she had a bad three years.”
Rolling his eyes and mocking Harris, Maher said, “When [CNN anchor Dana Bash] said what did you say when Biden called you and said he wasn’t running. ‘Well, I immediately thought of him first.’” Continuing, he skewered Kamala over her response to a question about her stance on fracking, saying, “I mean, fracking … Dana Bash had her dead to rights. It was like, ‘You said this, I have the quote. I’m reading it to you. You said there should be a ban on fracking.’ Why can’t they just go, ‘Yeah, you know what? I got it wrong.’”
Maher also repeatedly mocked Harris for bringing what he termed her “emotional support VP.” At one point during his opening monologue, commenting on the ridiculous matter, he said, “It was a little odd. He was just sitting there for a very long time without saying anything. He was just nodding while she did all the talking. The women’s focus groups said he must be a wonderful husband.”
