Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), one of 10 Republicans who many conservatives believe is a traitor for voting in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump following the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol, announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the 2026 midterms coming later this year. Newhouse wrote a statement announcing the news, which members of the MAGA movement celebrated.
“This decision comes with no reservations or remorse, only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress,” Newhouse said in the statement. Newhouse’s seat in Congress is in deep red territory and is considered by political analysts to be one that is likely to remain red in the midterms. In 2024, Newhouse barely managed to defeat a GOP challenger who received President Trump’s endorsement.
With his departure from Congress imminent, this leaves Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) as the sole remaining House Republican who voted to impeach the president. However, Valadao himself is facing an uphill battle in a well-known battleground district. In the Senate, many of those who voted to convict Trump have either already left or are facing extremely competitive opponents in the midterms.
In his statement, Newhouse touted his decades of public service, saying, “After over 25 years of public service, including more than a decade in the House, I am grateful to the Washingtonians who put their faith in me, as well as the colleagues I have served with on both sides of the aisle. Public service takes many forms. As I look forward to this new chapter and ways I can continue to serve my community and this great Nation, I do so with confidence that there are now qualified and serious people expressing interest in this office. Central Washington will have a strong, capable leader to whom I can pass the torch.”
He concluded by thanking his family. “I thank my family for their steadfast love and support which allowed me this opportunity to serve. I am truly humbled by this uniquely American journey that took a farm boy from Sunnyside, Washington clear across the country to represent his friends and neighbors in the ‘other’ Washington. I will continue to serve my district with energy and enthusiasm until the end of my term.”
The response from Trump supporters on social media was extremely enthusiastic, with many referring to Newhouse as a Republican In Name Only (RINO) and a traitor for having voted to impeach Trump during his first term. One user wrote, “Fantastic! Now we only have one slob RINO left to ditch who voted to impeach President Trump on bogus bullsh*t. Don’t let the door hit ya in the cowardly, traitorous a** on your way out.”
“I hope you have a miserable rest of your life,” the commenter continued. Another user had similar sentiments, saying, “Bye Dan. I don’t have to say anything because Salty [the user above] already covered the bases…!!!!! Asta la vista traitor….” Another user said that Newhouse will not be missed, writing, “You voted to impeach President Trump. I say this respectfully. You won’t be missed. Good riddance.”

Another commenter also had harsh words for Newhouse, saying, “Good riddance. History will remember you as the cowardly RINO who voted to impeach President Trump and wouldn’t survive his Republican challengers in 2026.” One person summed up MAGA’s sentiments by commenting, “You are uniparty and feed from the same trough as the CommunSocialist Democrats. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
