Sounding off on Vice President Kamala Harris and other lying politicians in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, July 1, X owner Elon Musk said that lying no longer works on X, at least for high-profile politicians, as they’ll get called out and exposed by Community Notes. Numerous commenters agreed with him on the post, which has now been viewed nearly 54 million times.
As background, Community Notes is Elon’s response to the need to fact-check viral lies: it allows certain community members to add context to a post and is generally applied relatively fairly against right and left, which is, to many, a far cry from other fact-checking regimes that many on the right argue are biased against conservatives.
In any case, VP Harris, in a post on June 30, claimed, “Donald Trump would ban abortion nationwide. President @JoeBiden and I will do everything in our power to stop him and restore women’s reproductive freedom.” Her post was quickly community-noted, with the note saying, “President Trump has repeatedly said he will not sign a national abortion ban.”
The community note also provided links to times when Trump has said as much. One of the linked articles, one which came from CNN, provided that Trump has said he would not sign a total abortion ban into law. He also said that he supports some restraints on abortion, saying, “I strongly supported the House of Representatives’ ‘Pain-Capable’ bill, which would end painful, late-term abortions nationwide, and I call upon the Senate to pass this important law and send it to my desk for signing.”
Similarly, in a recent video posted to Truth Social, Trump said that he supports state rights as regards abortion. He said, “My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land — in this case, the law of the state.”
Musk, then, ridiculed VP Harris for trying to lie about Trump and getting caught by his platform, saying, “When will politicians, or at least the intern who runs their account, learn that lying on this platform doesn’t work anymore?” Numerous commenters agreed in response, saying that they all lie but are now getting caught.
The Wall Street Silver account, for example, said, “They don’t know how to stop. They get their taking points and just repeat them, regardless of what actually happened.” Agreeing, another commenter said, “Yes they do, if it were not for lies they spew 24 hours a day, they would have nothing of importance and value to say. We have 4 years of documented records to prove it.”
Another commenter said, “I brought attention to this lie by humiliating Kamala Harris last night. Now Elon Musk is publicly calling her out. We are making a huge difference.” Still another added, “The democrats constantly lie. When have they ever told the truth? At least on X now, the truth is being exposed. Every other platform censors truth, so they continue to get away with it. This is why I encourage people on other platforms to join x. They’re in a bubble and need to leave it. It’s an information war.”
Yet another drew attention to this funny compilation of Kamala awkwardly talking about being unburdened. Watch it here:
