It was on Wednesday, February 5 that Sen. Mitch McConnell, not 82 years old, fell down a marble staircase on Capitol Hill while live on camera. The incident occurred after he cased his vote for President Donald Trump’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner. Predictably, commenters online chimed in to poke fun at the RINO Senator who still dislikes Trump, if seeming somewhat willing to work with him.
As background, the Wednesday incident occurred after the vote in the Senate, right as the longtime GOP leader was leaving the Senate floor. Having just left it, and being on camera while mounting a puny staircase, he was caught on camera falling forward. Immediately after he did so, fellow lawmakers Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) jumped in to assist him.
This comes after other falls among elderly legislators, such as Nancy Pelosi, including one for McConnell. He fell in December while attending a Senate lunch, after which medical staff with a wheelchair after the fall, which led to a sprained wrist. Witnesses claim the senator also walked away with a cut on his face after the incident.
Announcing the news on X, Senior Congressional Correspondent for Fox News Chad Pergram wrote, “Fox confirms. McConnell falls down Senate stairs after voting to confirm Scott Turner as HUD Secretary. Unclear about injuries. But Fox is told he appears to be ok. McConnell was helped up by Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).”
But while some reports were serious, many were joking, as McConnell is much disliked by many on the right given his habit of backing down to the left when it really matters. Many of those doing the joking pointed to a clip from 2014 in which McConnell fell on stage, using it to joke about his fall today and using a funny camera tactic seen in that fall to joke about the disliked senator.
Among the more incisive of those jokers was a commenter who pointed out that the way the camera moved made the moment seem like a television comedy scene. Joking about the scene and posting the clip of the fall from 2014, that person said, “the way they filmed mitch mcconnel falling down with the zoom out is pure kino. like a scene from the office of steve carrel doing slapstick.” Watch McConnell’s fall in 2014, the clip posted for that above post, here:

Replying, a commenter on that post attached the scene from “The Office” in which McConnell falls in the koi pond while on a business meeting trip and his coworkers find out, saying, “It’s quite literally Michael falling into the Koi pond.” Another said, “I honestly didnt think this was real the first time I seen it.”
Another commenter noted that the incident looked more like a scene from another comedic TV show, “Arrested Development,” writing, “This literally looks like Arrested Development.” Still another commenter referenced yet another TV show, saying, “Reminds me of something out of trailer park boys. Like a Leahy moment. You could picture him rolling out of a double wide, HAMMERED, and then just flattening out on the stage.”
