In one of the more surprising twists of this election, Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos ordered the editorial staff at the Washington Post to hire more conservative writers, causing a freakout online and allegedly leading to Bezos fighting a meltdown amongst some staff members inside the notoriously woke paper.
As background, the fight began with the Washington Post not endorsing Vice President Harris for the 2024 election. While rumors alleged that the decision came from Bezos, Will Lewis, the Post’s chief executive, said that it was his decision. He explained, “The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.”
He added, “We recognize that this will be read in a range of ways, including as a tacit endorsement of one candidate, or as a condemnation of another, or as an abdication of responsibility. That is inevitable. We don’t see it that way. We see it as consistent with the values The Post has always stood for and what we hope for in a leader: character and courage in service to the American ethic, veneration for the rule of law, and respect for human freedom in all its aspects. We also see it as a statement in support of our readers’ ability to make up their own minds on this, the most consequential of American decisions — whom to vote for as the next president.
Continuing, he further noted that the job is to be non-partisan, saying, “Our job at The Washington Post is to provide through the newsroom nonpartisan news for all Americans, and thought-provoking, reported views from our opinion team to help our readers make up their own minds.”
Then he demanded that the editorial staff hire more conservatives. The New York Post, reporting such, noted: “Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos has reportedly given the newspaper a mandate to add more conservative voices to its opinion section,” and that he has remained silent over the non-endorsement controversy.
As could be predicted, the online left was very upset about the decision. One poster on X, for example, claimed that the decision would utterly destroy the newspaper, saying, “And today it came out that Bezos has demanded that WaPo hire more conservative columnists. His actions lead one to believe he’s purposely trying to drive the paper into the ground.”
Another ridiculously ranted that the paper would be hiring InfoWars founder Alex Jones, writing, “If Bezos is telling WaPo to hire more “conservatives” for the editorial board, then his arguments for skipping an endorsement are clearly just a bullshit excuse. Wait for Rudy G and Alex Jones to turn up there …”
Still another said, “Owners like Bezos want better relationships with right-wing owners like Murdoch & so hired conservative EICs. It’s infuriating, & some editorial page editors are quitting. WaPo joins LA Times, refusing to endorse for president for 1st time since the 80’s.”
On the conservative side, an account claimed that Bezos had stared down and defeated the woke journalists at the paper, saying, “Jeff Bezos is doubling down. In a meeting this morning with leftist journalists threatening a walkout unless he reverses course and endorses Kamala Harris immediately, he told them they can “f-ck off”, and that WaPo will be hiring more Trump-friendly, conservative voices.”
