Bronny James, son of far-left NBA star LeBron James, was drafted as the 55th overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Lakers. Now, however, a former NBA player is taking to social media to accuse LeBron James of not just nepotism in allegedly trying to get the team to choose his son, but of a an alleged “abuse of power” in the team’s draft decision.
That allegation was made by Steven Hunter, who played in the NBA from 2001 to 2010. He, in a social media post, accused LeBron James of an abuse of power over not just the draft decision that many believe Bronny was not deserving of, but of getting the team to award him a large, lucrative contract that nearly all picks as low down the list as Bronny don’t receive.
Beginning his angry social media rant about Bronny, the Lakers, and LeBron, Hunter noted that Bronny’s contract was far more generous than those in his position typically get, suggesting that factors other than his still were involved. “For those that don’t know… Late second-round picks don’t get guarantees (especially before summer league ),” Hunter wrote.
Continuing, he further emphasized the overly generous nature of Bronny’s contract, arguing that it included other terms those in his position never get and, thus, that it “wasn’t earned” by Bronny. Hunter said, “Typically, late second-round picks don’t get 4 year guaranteed roster spot deals either. This wasn’t earned, I’m sorry…”
He then got to the abuse of power part of his angry post, going on the attack against LeBron and arguing that the contract discourages people from working hard to earn their spot. He said, “And it’s an egregious abuse of power from LBJ [LeBron James] & Rich Paul. It’s a slap in the face to all of the kids out there who work their asses off to get to the league. It’s sneaky Hollywood s— like this that turns a lot of people off about Lebron.”
Hunter then alleged that LeBron, in allegedly helping his son get a good position and generous contract, abused his power over what should be a meritocratic system in a way that other greats refused to. He wrote, “This is just another example of what they be talking about right when you try to like’em. This is why most people prefer [Michael Jordan] or Kobe [Bryant] over him because you know at least MJ or Kobe gone be straight shooters… Trust me MJ could’ve gotten one of his sons in the league if he chose to abuse his power like that.”
Concluding, he said that his argument isn’t with Bronny but rather with the league and LeBron allegedly colluding to ignore merit and go with nepotism instead. He said, “Not taking anything away from Bronny, nor am I upset at Bronny… Just know that this is a manipulation of our league and the integrity of what it truly takes to get there.”
