Ever since Rep. Matt Gaetz and a collection of other Republicans partnered with the Democrats to take down now-former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, who they thought betrayed the promises he made to them when made Speaker, the GOP has been working to find a replacement. Initially Rep. Steve Scalise was to be McCarthy’s replacement, but it now looks like Jim Jordan will be the new Speaker of the House, which would be a much more conservative choice.
With Rep. Jordan, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and close ally of former President Donald Trump, seemingly in line to be Speaker, his stances on the top issues facing the country and his party have risen to the fore, chief among which is his stance on the weaponization of judicial and law enforcement resources against conservatives.
Namely, Rep. Jordan is a noted critic of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the Georgia DA behind one of the legal attacks on former President Donald Trump and his 2020 allies and who is behind the Trump mugshot.
Rep. Jordan obliterated DA Willis in a late September letter, written in response to a claim from DA Willis that his attempts at oversight were interfering in her prosecution efforts. he wrote, “Your letter contends that the Committee, by conducting oversight into apparently politicized local prosecutions, is ‘obstruct[ing] a Georgia criminal proceeding’ and ‘advanc[ing] outrageous partisan misrepresentations.’ Your position is wrong.”
Continuing, Rep. Jordan wrote, “If state or local prosecutors can engage in politically motivated prosecutions of senior federal officers for acts they performed while in federal office, this could have a profound impact on how federal officers choose to exercise their powers.”
He added, “The information that we seek will allow us to assess the extent to which your indictment is politically motivated and whether Congress should therefore draft legislative reforms to, among other things, protect former and current Presidents from politically motivated prosecutions.”
He also said, “Federal law requires the United States Secret Service to protect a former President. Therefore, your indictment raises the potential for conflict between the federal law-enforcement officials required to protect President Trump and local law-enforcement officials required to enforce your indictment and exercise control of him throughout his presence in the local criminal justice system.”
Former President Trump backed Rep. Jordan for Speaker earlier in October, writing on Truth Social, “Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, DC, representing Ohio’s 4th Congressional District. He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”
Rep. Troy Nehls, another Trump ally in the House, reiterated the former president’s support on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Just had a great conversation with President Trump about the Speaker’s race. He is endorsing Jim Jordan, and I believe Congress should listen to the leader of our party.” Rep. Nehls then added, “After him thinking about it and this and that … he said he really is in favor of getting behind Jim Jordan.”
