According to recent reports, the California Coastal Commission voted to reject a proposal from Elon Musk’s SpaceX to lead more launches of the company’s spacecraft. However, the decision to block SpaceX was partly made because of Musk’s recent political activism, where he has endorsed former president Donald Trump and championed conservative causes.
According to direct statements from the commission, Musk’s political endeavors played a role in the decision to prevent him from carrying out more launches from the Vandenberg Space Force base. “The decision to deny an increase in rocket launches at Vandenberg Space Force Base was motivated by several factors. However, the primary concern articulated by the Commissioners at Thursday’s public hearing was that SpaceX, as a private company, should itself be applying for a coastal development permit under California state law,” the commission said.
The organization expressed concern about Musk using his power to promote his political agenda. “This company [SpaceX] is owned by the richest person in the world [Elon Musk] with direct control of what could be the most expansive communications system in the planet,” according to California Coastal Commissioner Mike Wilson. “Just last week that person was talking about political retribution.”
Conservative commentator Ian Miles Cheong also commented on the matter, stating, “This is what lawfare against Elon Musk looks like, and they aren’t even hiding it. The California Coastal Commission voted 6-4 to reject SpaceX’s proposal to increase Falcon 9 launches from 36 to 50 at Vandenberg Space Force Base, citing in part the political activities of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on X. These petty bureaucrats are targeting Musk’s business operations due to his vocal political stances on the platform, rather than solely focusing on environmental or safety concerns.”
Users on X reacted to the shocking news, blasting the decision from the commission. “The most surprising thing to me over these past 3-4 years is that they’re no longer trying to hide their bias and hypocrisy. 20 years ago, they were just as biased, but they at least made the effort to hide it. Now they’re so brazen about it! Why did they stop caring about keeping up appearances? What do they know that we don’t?” one person commented.
