Taylor Sheridan’s smash hit television series Landman on Paramount+ totally savaged ABC’s The View in its latest episode, mocking it as being a morning talk show about a “bunch of pi*ssed off millionaires.” The fifth episode of the show’s second season, titled “The Pirate Dinner,” features a conversation between main character Tommy Norris, played by actor Billy Bob Thornton, and his dad, T.L., played by the legendary Sam Elliott.
As the two men talk, Tommy suggests his pops check out The View to kill some time. His dad asks him what the show is about. “A bunch of pi*ssed off millionaires b*tching about how much they hate millionaires and Trump and men and you and me and everybody else they got a bee up their a** about. It’s pretty funny,” Tommy responds.
T.L. says, “Don’t sound funny.” Tommy further elaborates, rather eloquently, “Well, it ain’t joke funny, it’s like ‘fart in church’ funny, you know what I mean?” When his dad says that doesn’t really sound funny either, Tommy responds, “Well it depends on your proximity to the fart.”
Landman, created by Taylor Sheridan, who also created Yellowstone, and Christian Wallace, tells the story of the wealthy Norris family and the interactions they have with big players in the oil industry in West Texas. As we previously reported on The American Tribune, what put the show on the map was a video clip from an episode of the first season featuring Tommy going on a rant against the use of renewable energy sources like wind power.
“You have any idea how much diesel will have to burn to mix that much concrete or make that steel and haul this s— out here and put it together with a 450-foot crane? You want to guess how much oil it takes to lubricate that f—ing thing? Or winterize it? In its 20-year lifespan, it won’t offset the carbon footprint of making it. And don’t get me started on solar panels and the lithium in your Tesla battery,” he stated in the clip.
Hilariously, Thornton was a guest on The View in 2024 where he promoted the premiere of the show with the very same people his character would later mock. Sheridan is the only writer credited for every episode of the series. A report from Variety accuses the show’s creator of using the character of Tommy as a fictional proxy to share his opinion on a wide variety of different culturally relevant topics.
Co-creator Christian Wallace, whose podcast series Boomtown served as the inspiration for the show, was recently asked how many future seasons of the hit series fans might expect, saying that decision “is above [his] pay grade.” He then added, “I think there are a lot of external factors that always go into those types of decisions, but I will say that we have a lot of story left to tell, and I hope we get to just continue doing that.”
