Recently, Lady Gaga featured transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney in an Instagram post commemorating International Women’s Day. However, the pop star is the subject of intense backlash over the post, as social media users have voiced their anger over Mulvaney being celebrated as a woman.
“I’m putting you on my vision board, for life,” to which Mulvaney replied, “I love you.” Reportedly, the two were performing a photo shoot for Haus Labs, Lady Gaga’s cosmetic brand, and the pharmaceutical company Clinuvel. Following the Instagram post, many users voiced their criticism of the two in the comments section.
“Isn’t womens day for women? Lol just another case of some.. creep male trying to take one more thing from women,” one user commented on Instagram. “This is so degrading to REAL women,” another person added, echoing a similar sentiment. “Why’s Dylan representing. He’s ‘NOT’ a woman. What an insult to us ‘REAL’ women. Quit invading our territory,” another user said.
Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has consistently expressed her intention to spread the LGBTQ agenda for years. “When I started in the mainstream it was the gays that lifted me up. I committed myself to them and they committed themselves to me, and because of the gay community I’m where I am today,” she said during a 2017 interview. “I very much want to inject gay culture into the mainstream,” the vocalist added. “It’s not an underground tool for me. It’s my whole life. So I always sort of joke the real motivation is to just turn the world gay.”
Following the backlash against Lady Gaga and Dylan Mulvaney, the musician doubled down, defending her post. “It’s appalling to me that a post about National Women’s Day by Dylan Mulvaney and me would be met with such vitriol and hatred. When I see a newspaper reporting on hatred but calling it ‘backlash’ I feel it is important to clarify that hatred is hatred, and this kind of hatred is violence. ‘Backlash’ would imply that people who love or respect Dylan and me didn’t like something we did. This is not backlash. This is hatred,” she said.
Lady Gag continued, “But it is not surprising given the immense work that it’s obvious we still have to do as a society to make room for transgender lives to be cherished and upheld by all of us. I feel very protective in this moment, not only of Dylan, but of the trans community who continues to lead the way with their endless grace and inspiration in the face of constant degradation, intolerance, and physical, verbal, and mental violence.”
Dylan Mulvaney became embroiled in controversy last year when Bud Light collaborated with the transgender activist to create promotional content for the beer company. In April of 2023, Bud Light launched the infamous campaign that sparked one of the most powerful conservative boycotts of a woke brand.
In the subsequent months, Bud Light sales experienced enormous declines; in some months, the figures dropped by nearly 30% year-over-year. Simultaneously, parent company Anheuser-Busch experienced significant volatility where its stock price plummeted, erasing billions in market value. Ultimately, Bud Light’s self-inflicted damage undeniably tarnished the company’s brand image and reputation with beer drinkers, where some have predicted the consequences are irreversible.
