According to recent reports, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is using her power as an influential member of the Democratic Party to thwart Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) efforts to assume an influential position in the House. The progressive member of the far-left “Squad” reportedly has ambitions to become a ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, having previously served as a vice-ranking member.
However, Nancy Pelosi has publicly supported Virginia Congressman Gerry Connelly over AOC, who is also running for the position. While Pelosi is no longer serving in House Democratic leadership, her status as a seasoned veteran in the party still holds immense power, where she is supposedly making calls on behalf of Connolly for the position on the Oversight Committee.
AOC expressed initial interest in pursuing the committee position earlier this month, noting she was engaging in discussions with her congressional colleagues on formalizing her bid. Despite the alleged opposition to AOC’s potential bid, Pelosi has praised the New York congresswoman in previous comments, dismissing reports of a feud in their past.
However, The American Tribune recently reported on criticism toward Nancy Pelosi’s leadership blaming her for the massive “electoral collapse” who was the “only speaker in history to have lost control of the House twice.” Republican analyst Miranda Devine opined that Pelosi’s political strategies have amounted to an egregious failure, particularly after the Kamala Harris campaign spent an exorbitant amount on her unsuccessful presidential bid.
“It’s high time to shatter the myth of Nancy Pelosi as a master strategist. Nobody deserves more blame than the ridiculously self-titled “speaker emerita” for the Democrats’ $1 billion electoral collapse,” Devine said. “Under her ruthless leadership, her party lost the White House, the House, the Senate and the popular vote. You can’t say that enough.”
“She’s the only speaker in history to have lost control of the House twice. She’s finished,” Devine emphasized. Despite these leadership failures, Devine pointed out that Pelosi is still running for reelection. “Yet she still has the nerve to reward herself with another term, filing the papers last week to run for re-election in 2026, at the tender age of 86! She’ll be 88 at the end of Trump’s term,” she continued.
Furthermore, The Tribune also reported on comments from Teamsters International President Sean O’Brien calling for Democratic leaders such as Chuck Schumer and Pelosi to step aside and allow for a reset in the Democratic Party. The remarks from O’Brien come as President-elect Donald Trump gained historic levels of union support, pulling the demographic away from the Democrats.
“So they’ve got a lot of — they’ve got a lot of soul searching to do. And look, I said this earlier today in another interview that, you know, the Democrat Party needs to take a look in the mirror and say, ‘You know, maybe Chuck Schumer’s time is over. Maybe Pelosi’s time is over,” he said unapologetically.
“Let’s figure out who’s going to be the best for the party.’ And look, as an organization, we’re always looking at how do we lead this organization better than we found it. I think that needs to be the focus,” O’Brien asserted. The president of the union concluded, “Look, we all have pensions for a reason. That’s to use them and retire and enjoy your life. Maybe they should take a page out of Joe Biden’s book and step aside.”
