Recently, Rep. Jamaal Bowman has come under fire for his absurd decision to pull a fire alarm in the Capitol. Bowman pulled the alarm, causing a massive delay to a long day of the House of Representatives passing bills. White House correspondent for Fox News Peter Doocy questioned White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre over the incident at which, to no surprise, she gave a non-answer and skirted Doocy’s question.
Doocy asked Jean-Pierre the simple question, “Would President Biden ever try to get out of a meeting by pulling a fire alarm?” KJP responded, “Are you talking about something specifically?” Apparently, the press secretary required further context on Doocy’s question about a highly publicized event in the political world.
Doocy asked again, “A Democratic member of Congress pulled the fire alarm around a series of votes. No fire. Is that appropriate?” KJP answered, “What I can tell you is I’m not talking to the spoken to the President about this. And so just not going just not going to comment or leave it up to I know there’s a house process moving forward right now. Leave it to the house.”
One would think it would be quite easy to answer Doocy’s question and condemn the criminal actions of Bowman. However, KJP opted to dodge the question entirely. The American Tribune reported on rampant calls from Republicans to arrest Rep. Bowman for his deplorable actions in the Capitol. Reportedly, Bowman could face various legal punishments for his actions, including months in prison and hefty fines. Apparently, Bowman could receive a felony as a maximum punishment.
“This is the United States Congress, not a New York City high school. To pull the fire alarm to disrupt proceedings when we are trying to draft legislation to AVERT A SHUTDOWN is pathetic…even for members of the socialist squad,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) said.
“NY Democrat Jamaal Bowman literally pulled a fire alarm to stall and prevent our efforts to force a vote to keep the federal government open. Pathetic. Criminal investigation needs to happen,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.).
Rep. Bowman tried to excuse his actions by stating, “I want to personally clear up confusion surrounding today’s events. Today, as I was rushing to make a vote, I came to a door that is usually open for votes but today would not open. I am embarrassed to admit that I activated the fire alarm, mistakenly thinking it would open the door. I regret this and sincerely apologize for any confusion this caused.”
He continued, “But I want to be very clear, this was not me, in any way, trying to delay any vote. It was the exact opposite — I was trying urgently to get to a vote, which I ultimately did and joined my colleagues in a bipartisan effort to keep our government open. I also met after the vote with the Sergeant at Arms and the Capitol Police, at their request, and explained what had happened. My hope is that no one will make more of this than it was. I am working hard every day, including today, to do my job, to do it well, and deliver for my constituents.”
