“Killed Too Many Brain Cells with His Habits”: Willie Nelson Skewered by Former Fans after Backing Radical Leftist Candidate in Texas

One of the greatest living legends and cultural icons of the classic era of country music has ignited a firestorm of controversy after he issued an endorsement of a high-profile Texas Democratic Senate candidate for the 2026 midterms. Willie Nelson announced that he would be formally endorsing Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico in his campaign against Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

“Hi, this is Willie Nelson,” the singer, who is 93, goes on to say in a brief video posted on social media. “I’ve gotten to know James Talarico. He’s a good man who will be a good senator for the state of Texas. Please vote, and vote for James Talarico.” Nelson’s endorsement isn’t really a big shock. The Talarico campaign had already deeply associated itself with the “On the Road Again” singer before the video was released.

Talarico is pulling out all the stops to become the first Democrat candidate to win a statewide race in Texas in three decades. He made an appearance with Nelson backstage at his yearly July 4th concert, where Nelson wore a Talarico hat in the photo taken at the event. It’s also not the first time that Nelson has used his massive platform and following to wade into Texas elections, even small stated.

According to a report from Rolling Stone, Nelson endorsed Democrat Beto O’Rourke for Senate in 2018, even going so far as to perform at one of his rallies and releasing a song called “Vote ‘Em Out.” Four years after that, Nelson endorsed O’Rourke a second time in 2022 when he was running for governor against conservative Greg Abbott. He lost against Abbott and it wasn’t even close.

“Willie’s music is great,” Ted Cruz went on to say in a taunting response to Nelson’s Talarico endorsement. “But historically, [a Nelson endorsement] has been the beginning of the end for Democrat campaigns in Texas.” Users on social media certainly had strong feelings about Nelson supporting Talarico and other Democratic candidates.

One individual replied to the video saying that Nelson “killed many brain cells with his habits” and that’s why he’s making such bad decisions when it comes to picking candidates for important governmental positions. “No. Willie is an icon as a musician, but has not been sober or drug-free for much of his life. He’s killed many brain cells with his habits. Stick to your music @willienelson and let the rest of us choose a qualified, competent Senator,” the user wrote.

Another individual commented that they never allow the public opinions of celebrities impact how they vote when it comes to politics. “I like Willie and his music. Always have. I don’t really put any weight on anybody’s opinion on politics. I make my own decisions,” the person said in the post. Someone else said the country superstar needs to pontificate on politics less and focus on performing his music.

“Willie needs to STFU and just sing!” the person said. One user said, “Willie just created his own Bud Light situation. Thought he was dead.” Another person wrote that not even an endorsement from George Straight could sway his vote to Talarico,  “Even if George Strait endorsed Talarico, it wouldn’t change my mind, lol,” the person said.
