Kellyanne Conway, a former counselor to Trump during his first term, recently suggested that the former president would attain “monster gains” from Hispanic voters if he were to choose a “person of color” as his vice president.
Conway made the claims during a recent appearance on Fox News’ “Outnumbered,” where a panel of contributors criticized the Biden administration for its attempts to appeal to Latino voters. It was suggested that Biden is merely pandering to the community to earn their vote.
The former advisor to Trump suggested that Latinos have “so many reasons” to ditch the Democratic party and vote Republican in the upcoming election. Conway claimed that one of the main points of support stems from Trump’s agenda on illegal immigration and securing the border.
“Look, every way you look at it, Hispanics have so many reasons to dump Biden. Harris. The main one is the border. How cynical of an entire Democratic Party to believe that in the nine years since Donald Trump elevated into international consciousness his view on illegal immigration. Build the wall. Be fair to the people here, America first,” Conway said.
Polling from earlier this year from the New York Times and Sienna College indicates that Trump is beating Biden by approximately 6 points with Hispanic voters. While Biden decisively outperformed Trump in the 2020 election across minority communities, the GOP frontrunner has since seen a notable increase in support from minority voting demographics.
Conway further asserted that Democrats are mistaken in their beliefs that Trump’s border rhetoric will drive away Latino voters. She added that hostile liberal attitudes toward religion, where Hispanics are largely Christian, alongside the leftist pandemic response, have also turned off this demographic. Furthermore, Biden’s economy is in a challenging state, which has proven to be a primary concern across all voters.
“Nine years later, the Democrats still think that attacking Donald Trump on the border is going to get them Hispanic vote. Hispanics are also upset that they are hostile to religion, that they masked up their kids and kept them home for the better part of two school years. The economic upward mobility that is being lost to them. So I think that Donald Trump’s going to have a monster gains among Hispanics, and I think it’s part of why he should pick a person of color as his VP,” she added.
However, Conway maintained that Trump should not solely select his running mate based on their immutable characteristics to appeal to an ethnic group. She emphasized that they should align with Trump’s America First agenda.
“In other words, the individual should complement, not complicate, his America First record and vision and recognize the difference between loyalty-as-tenacity (yes) and loyalty-as-obsequiousness (no),” Conway said.
Beyond just Latino voters, research suggests that former President Trump is also doing well with other diverse voting blocks, such as the Black community. Reports indicate that, since the 2020 election, black support for Trump has increased from 4% to 23%, growing 500%. This is a troubling sign for the Biden campaign, as the president secured 92% of the black vote in 2020.
