Pop star Katy Perry received a chorus of boos following a disparaging comment that she directed at an “American Idol” contestant. This marks the first time in her “American Idol” career that the live audience has so emphatically voiced their displeasure with the judge.
The Daily Wire’s Katie Jerkovich wrote about the lead to the incident, which occurred following a performance from singer and contestant Nutsa Buzaladze. Jerkovich said:
In clips of Monday’s show, the 38-year-old pop singer seemed less impressed with contestant Nutsa Buzaladze’s attire during the reality singing contest that’s now been narrowed down to 26 contestants.
It came after Buzaladze took to the stage and gave a widely praised performance of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ “Paris (Ooh La La).” She was dressed in a silver mini dress and high-heeled sparkling boots as she danced and rocked the stage.
While the ensuing remarks from Katy Perry seemed to be coming from a constructive place, some fans thought that the jab was mean spirited and out of line for a judge on the show. Perry said:
“Nutsa, every time you take the stage, it’s like you glitter bomb the stage.”
“Listen, I think that one thing I personally would like to see from you is not one piece of glitter the next time. I know that’s gonna be hard.”
“OK, first time in six seasons.”
“Whoo-hoo! But what I’m saying is that I’d like you to flip the script. I think we want to be, like, pulled in by our hearts, too. I’d love to see that, and I think America might, too.”

Perry isn’t unaccustomed to finding herself in hot water as a judge on American Idol. In an episode aired on March 5, Perry received criticism for mocking a mother of three following an audition. Here is what Yahoo News wrote about the incident:
During the episode, which aired on 5 March, Liebe told judges that she had given birth to three children before the age of 25. Perry then got up from her chair and pretended to faint, as Liebe said: “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m going to pass out.”
The “California Gurls” singer then replied: “Honey, you been laying on the table too much,” which prompted laughter from her fellow judges Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan.
After her audition aired, Liebe posted a TikTok about her audition, in which she admitted that she found Perry’s joke “hurtful” and went on to discourage others from “mom-shaming”.
The American Idol contestant later quit the show on 2 April after speaking out about Perry’s “mom-shaming” comments.
Perry would later beg Liebe to come back onto the show, saying:
“Sara Beth, I know life is scary. I also know that it’s easier to walk away than to be rejected. But then I also know that you lose out on your fullest potential. Remember that self-love is just as big as motherly love.”
