NBC News shattered the relevant peace and calm over the weekend by reporting that security officials were preparing for the arrest of former President Donald Trump. That sparked outrage from many Republicans who claimed that the latest in the political persecution of Biden’s main enemy was characteristic of a banana republic.
In the article, NBC noted that an indictment of the former president and 2024 presidential election contender could come as soon as this week and that the security officials are having to come up with security plans and contingencies for the arrest and location where Trump will be charged.
Reporting on that, the NBC article said:
Local, state and federal law enforcement and security agencies are preparing for the possibility that former President Donald Trump will be indicted as early as next week, according to five senior officials familiar with the preparations.
Law enforcement agencies are conducting preliminary security assessments, the officials said, and are discussing potential security plans in and around the Manhattan Criminal Court, at 100 Centre Street, in case Trump is charged in connection with an alleged hush money payment to Stormy Daniels and travels to New York to face any charges.
Trump then exploded on Truth Social, informing his supporters that he’d soon be arrested and calling on Americans to “protest” the potential indictment. Though some of the higher-profile Republicans, such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, stayed silent, many more joined the fray and sounded off on the political persecution of Donald Trump.
JD Vance refused to retract his endorsement of Trump, Rep. Jim Jordan said Americans know what is really going on here, Kevin McCarthy called for immediate investigations of those involved and said he was directing the relevant committees to begin such investigations, and Kari Lake skewered the potential arrest as characteristic of a banana republic.
She made that argument in a statement posted to Twitter. Beginning the statement, Lake said:
“Prosecuting your political opponents is something you’d expect to see in third-world Banana Republics. But it’s coming to America, and that should scare the hell out of us. For nearly a decade, the radical left and their willing sycophants in the media have put President Donald J. Trump through absolute hell. Accusation after accusation, investigation after investigation. And they’ve come away with nothing. Now, in their desperation to derail his re-election, we see this ludicrous effort to jail him on the flimsiest campaign finance violations they can find.”
Continuing, she noted that the arrest is an attempt to silence the American people, saying, “This political persecution fuels the EXACT same division the democrats claim that Trump incites. Donald Trump is truly a man of the people. From the moment he came down the escalator in 2015, he was We The People’s voice. And the corrupt political machine has been desperate to silence him ever since. These politically motivated attacks against the presumptive next President of the United States are political interference at a level this country has never seen before.”
