In big news for those wanting to see corrupt and fraud-minded Swamp legislators face the consequences of their illegal actions, the Federal Election Commission announced that the Maxine Waters campaign committee from 2020 committed numerous campaign finance law violations and would face a heavy fine for them.
As background, the campaign committee on behalf of longtime Congresswoman Maxine Waters was called Citizens for Waters. According to the FEC, the California congresswoman’s campaign committee violated the law in a number of ways, mainly revolving around its handling of donated campaign cash.
Particularly, in the report on the matter that was released on Friday, May 30 and reported on by Fox News Digital, the FEC accused the Citizens for Waters of “failing to accurately report receipts and disbursements in calendar year 2020,” “knowingly accepting excessive contributions,” and “making prohibited cash disbursements.”
On the matter of excessive contributions, Fox News Digital reports, the FEC found that the Citizens for Waters group accepted excessive campaign contributions from seven individuals over 2019 and 2020. Those contributions totaled $19,000 despite the per-person legal contribution limit being capped at $2,800. Further, the FEC found that Citizens for Waters “made four prohibited cash disbursements that were each in excess of $100, totaling $7,000,”
As a result, the campaign was fined $68,000, the FEC said, and as a result of agreeing to paying the fine will be able to avoid prosecution in a court over the violations. Fox News Digital reported that the FEC’s report revealed the Citizens for Waters committee will both pay the $68,000 civil fine and “send its treasurer to a Commission-sponsored training program for political committees within one year of the effective date of this Agreement.”
Continuing, Fox News Digital revealed that the FEC document also provided that the treasurer will have to report on his or her registration for and attendance of the training program, saying, “Respondent shall submit evidence of the required registration and attendance at such event to the Commission.”
Fox News Digital further reports that the Citizens for Waters campaign committee told the FEC that it had legal staff in place in an attempt to comply with the rules, saying that it “contends that it retained legal counsel to provide advice and guidance to the treasurer and implemented procedures to ensure the disbursements comply with the requirements of the Act.”

Conservative commenters on X were furious over what they saw as the FEC only hitting Rep. Waters with a slap on the wrist. Mike Engleman, for example, wrote, “Maxine Waters’ campaign was found guilty of violating multiple election laws and ordered to pay $68,000. If she was a Republican, she would be expelled from Congress and be under an FBI investigation looking at prison. The two-tiered justice system is a joke.”
Responding to that post in a quote tweet, another commentator said, on much the same note, “Why haven’t @SpeakerJohnson & @HouseGOP demanded the resignation of Maxine Waters? If she won’t resign, EXPEL her. Can we get a Republican majority who have the BALLS to stand up and hold democrats accountable?”
