In very sad news, former Republican United States Congressman Mia Love has passed away at just 49 years old after fighting brain cancer for years. Such is what the former representative’s family announced on X (formerly Twitter) in a post that came late in the evening on Sunday, March 23.

As background, former Rep. Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a brain tumor, in 2022, but didn’t reveal her diagnosis until August of 2023. The cancer battle lasted, apparently going reasonably well, until February of 2025, at which point her family announced on X that he cancer had stopped responding to treatment.

It was former Rep. Love’s daughter, Abigale, who announced that sad news, telling the world that her mom’s cancer was progressing rather than responding to treatment, and so the family was just waiting for the end and trying to get a few more memories in before it occurred. She said, “Hello Friends, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer. Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing.”

Continuing and noting that she wanted anyone with a welcome memory to send it in, Abigale wrote, “We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her. I am building an archive of special memories with Mia. Please send your pictures, videos and memories to me at MiaLoveMemories@gmail.com. Thank you ❤️”

The end then came just weeks later, the family announced on the same X account that former Rep. Love had passed away. Beginning, the family noted that she passed away peacefully on Sunday, writing, “Love Family: With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today.”

Continuing, the family noted that she was reliving welcome and happy memories while surrounded with her loving family when the end came, providing, “She was in her home surrounded by family. In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.”

Concluding, they thanked everyone who has been praying for their prayers and similar messages, and promised to release more details soon. Doing so, they wrote, “We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.”

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, leaving a comment on the post, noted that those who knew her will remember her well, particularly for her leadership and friendliness. He wrote, “Members of Congress are mourning the passing of @MiaBLove, who was a trusted friend and colleague, an extraordinary person, and an exceptional leader. She will always be remembered for her warm smile and wit, and her historic contributions. God bless her family and her legacy. Our prayers are with you all.”

As a reminder, former Rep. Love won a seat in a redrawn district near Utah’s Salt Lake City in 2014, becoming in the process the first black Republican woman ever elected to Congress and the first black member of Congress to represent Utah when she won. While a member of Congress, Rep. Love was mainly known for working on the Financial Services Committee. She then lost the seat in 2018.
