A judge recently ruled that a transgender-identifying volleyball player on the San Jose State women’s volleyball team will be permitted to play in the team’s conference tournament. The university has been the subject of intense controversy surrounding Blaire Fleming, who identifies as a woman, but many argue should be ineligible to compete.
However, Federal Judge S. Kato Crew, appointed by President Biden, ruled that Fleming would be allowed to compete on the San Jose State women’s volleyball team. Throughout this season, numerous teams have forfeited matches against the university over Fleming’s presence on the roster. Subsequently, the school has issued statements defending Fleming and praising the judge’s ruling.
“San José State University will continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms. All San José State University student-athletes are eligible to participate in their sports under NCAA and Mountain West Conference rules,” according to a statement from the university reported by Outkick. “We are gratified that the Court rejected an eleventh-hour attempt to change those rules. Our team looks forward to competing in the Mountain West volleyball tournament this week.”
So far, four teams have forfeited against San Jose State in the regular season. Following the decision from Utah State and Southern Utah to take a loss instead of competing against Fleming, Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox spoke out, stating, “I stand with the students, coaches, and leadership at @SUUtbirds and @USUAggies in their decision to forgo their women’s volleyball matches against San Jose State.”
The governor continued, “It is essential that we preserve a space for women to compete fairly and safely. Our female athletes are left grappling with this difficult issue because the NCAA has failed in its responsibility to protect female athletes and women’s sports. It’s time for the NCAA to take this seriously and protect our female student athletes.”
The American Tribune recently reported on the Boise State women’s volleyball team forfeiting against San Jose State, drawing praise from conservatives online. The school said, “Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 28. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State.”
Outkick Sports founder David Hookstead commented on the move, writing, “Boise State women’s volleyball announces it will not play San Jose State because the team’s best player is a male. Sources close to the situation tell me the players have the complete support of the school, coaches a, and parents.”
He continued, “These women deserve to be applauded. It was a team decision to not play against a male dominating everyone else, and they made the decision knowing some people would attack them for it. Next two games are at home. I have a feeling it will be packed attendance!”
“Stand with Boise State for not caving to the woke nonsense of men playing in women’s sports. It’s not only highly unfair. It’s dangerous,” another person wrote. “For boise is state its just one game, but for for san jose it’s so far been 2 they haven’t even able to play. If more teams do this, San Jose will have to act, they can’t not play the entire season,” another user added.
