Joran van der Sloot, the killer of Natalee Holloway, was injured by two fellow inmates in his prison in Peru. It is in that prison, Peru’s notorious Challapalca Prison, that he is serving his 28-year sentence for murder. Challapalca is known as the prison where the most dangerous inmates in Peru are held, making it exceedingly dangerous, particularly in its common areas, in one of which van der Sloot was attacked.
As background, though van der Sloot, a Dutch national in his mid-30s, is most infamous for being the alleged killer of American student Natalee Holloway, he is in Challapalca for the 2010 murder of his ex-girlfriend, business student Stefany Flores Ramirez. Van der Sloot admitted to Holloway’s 2005 murder in 2023 as part of a plea deal.
According to the New York Post, which reported on the attack on van der Sloot, inmates piled into the assault and brawl and it was only then, after the brawl had escalated, that guards managed to step in and stop the assault.
The NYP went on to report that van der Sloot was inspected by medical personnel at the prison after the assault, but was released back into the prison’s general population after it was determined that he suffered just bruises and lacerations in the attack.
According to the NYP, a spokesperson for Peru’s National Penitentiary Institute would not delve into the specifics of the incident, but did admit that “A lot of people want him dead.” That desire for his death comes both because van der Sloot is allegedly insufferable, and because his murdered ex-girlfriend was the daughter of Ricardo Flores, “a popular entertainment impresario and former president of the Peruvian Auto Club.”
But the NYP also quotes Emil Quiñones, who served time with van der Sloot in the US when he faced extortion charges in America in 2023, as saying that van der Sloot is insufferable to the other members of the prison population, often bullying them and picking fights. The insinuation is that such behavior could have provoked the brawl.
Quiñones said, “Arrogant, cocky, just a total douchebag.” He continued, explaining how terrible van der Sloot is in prison, “He walks around jail like he’s the boss. Demands what he wants, treats other guys like s—t. He made a lot of enemies because he’s such an a—hole.”

Quiñones added, “I don’t think he’ll ever get out alive. All he really knows is prison and I think he likes it. He’ll either reoffend to stay in jail, or he’ll be killed by someone. I don’t know if he even cares one way or the other.”
Similarly, a childhood friend of van der Sloot’s said that he is often “combative” and the sort of person who provokes fights, saying, “He’s always been combative.” Continuing, that former friend went on to add, “He has no trouble spouting off and getting in someone’s face. He’s just an aggressive person, always has been. He can hold his own.”
