In the wake of the great news that Stephen Colbert’s show is being canceled by CBS and CBS parent company Paramount because it loses tens of millions of dollars a year, a major blow to one of the woke left’s more famous late-night comedians, conservatives on X took to contrasting Colbert with the much better-liked Johnny Carson.
A background, when announcing that his network had decided to shutter his show, Colbert declared that he had only learned the night before that, after a decade on air, The Late Show is being canceled and “next year will be our last season.” In fact, he announced, the show is being completely canceled, and he won’t even be replaced.
The audience started booing when he announced that the show was being canceled, and he admitted that he agreed with their emotions regarding the matter, saying, “Yeah, I share your feelings.” He then added, “It’s not just the end our our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
CBS, for its part, said, “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘THE LATE SHOW’ franchise at that time.” Continuing, the joint statement from CBS executives admitted, “We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”
In the wake of that awesome announcement that Colbert will be off the air for good soon enough, conservatives online, particularly on X, decided to celebrate. For example, Federalist correspondent Margaret Cleveland said, “Johnny Carson re-runs would garner more viewers than Colbert live.”
Commenters on her post agreed, and chimed in to share some of their favorite moments and best cracks at Colbert. One of the top commenters, for example, described one of his favorite Johnny Carson moments, saying, “Carson reruns are awesome! Especially when he had a guest like singer/composer/actor Paul Williams who comes straight from filming Battle of the Planet of the Apes in full makeup! 🤣”
Others chimed in with comments about Colbert being awful. One joked, for example, that pretty much anyone could garner more views than Colbert, saying, “I’m pretty sure reruns of The Chevy Chase Show would garner more viewers.” On much the same note, another said, “Hell, just re-running clips of Tommy Newsome bantering with Johnny Carson would garner more viewers. Stop and think about it – Carson’s back-up band director was funnier than Colbert.”

Many, many more other commenters chimed in with similar messages that roasted Colbert and praised Carson. “I still occasionally watch Carson reruns. I’ve never watched Colbert,” said one. Another added, roasting modern comedy generally, “We watch them all the time. MUCH more entertaining than Anything on television now!”
Those commenters stood quite in contrast to remarks made by woke members of the media complex. Sunny Hostin, for example, declared in a lengthy tirade on “The View” that cancelling Colbert was an attack on American democracy. She said, in part, “We must protect our Constitution and we must protect our democracy! This is bigger than just the cancellation of a television show!”
