“Sound of Freedom” has been a surprising, massive box office hit this summer. The film recently passed the $100 million mark in North America just after three weeks after its release. The movie deals with the harsh, but real issue of human trafficking and its impact on children.
The milestone is especially impressive for “Sound of Freedom” because it is relatively low-budget and faith-based. The film, which is partially crowd-funded and supported by Angel Studios didn’t have an exorbitant marketing budget like Disney, who can spend hundreds of millions on marketing its content only for it to flop at the box office and lose millions. Jim Caviezel’s new movie is also the first independent film post-pandemic to reach $100 million at the domestic box office.
However, the Oscar-winning movie “Everything, Everywhere All at Once” reached $100 million globally, but $63 million of that were international box office sales. In contrast, “Sound of Freedom” is only showing the United States, so its domestic performance is much stronger. As of writing this article, the faith-based movie is the 16th highest-grossing film of the year in North America, with prospects to keep climbing.
“Sound of Freedom” has rallied behind the support of Christian and conservative audiences supporting Caviezel and the cause of the film. Angel Studios even implemented a “Pay It Forward” system where people could buy tickets and donate to others so they could watch the movie free of charge.
Angel Studios had the noble goal of selling 2 million tickets to commemorate the 2 million children impacted by the horrors of human trafficking. According to the studio’s website, “Our 2 million ticket goal symbolizes our commitment to the 2 million trafficked children around the world. Actual numbers may be adjusted after auditing.”
“Sound of Freedom” ticket sales have far surpassed the goal of only selling 2 million tickets. As of writing this article, the film has sold almost 9.5 million tickets, exceeding the goal by 471 percent, according to the website.
Jared Geesey, Senior Vice President of Global Distribution for Angel Studios, thanked fans around the country for their support of the Christian-based film. “Time and again, Angel fans have proven that they’ll support films that are entertaining and inspiring, and ‘SOUND OF FREEDOM’ is no exception,” Geesey said.
He addressed the large number of presales for the movie stating, “Industry experts are telling us this surge in presales is stunning the whole industry, but we believe the Angels marshaling their resources for this film aim for it to stun people outside of our industry, to wake audiences all over the globe to the plight of these children.”
According to a summary of the plot, “Sound of Freedom is a true story film that exposes the darkness of child trafficking. A federal agent saves a boy from traffickers, but his sister is still captive. He embarks on a dangerous mission, risking his life to free her from a fate worse than death.”
The unprecedented response to “Sound of Freedom” has nothing short of eye-opening that independent films can be successful when they align with the actual interests of consumers. See a trailer for Sound of Freedom below.
