Special Counsel Jack Smith recently resigned from the Justice Department after he failed to bring his case against Donald Trump relating to the president-elect’s alleged interference after the 2020 election. The move comes as Trump’s inauguration is just days away, after which the incoming administration would likely fire Smith.
After Trump decisively won the election in November, Smith filed a motion to have the election interference case brought against the president-elect dismissed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Furthermore, Smith also filed a motion to dismiss the documents case against Trump in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Reportedly, the move “will leave in place the district court’s order dismissing the indictment without prejudice as to him.”
Smith’s resignation was announced in a court filing on Saturday, in which a footnote read, “The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10.” President-elect Trump was quick to comment on the news of Smith’s departure from the Justice Department.
“Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. The incoming president further argued that the cases “should never have been brought” against him.
“These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought,” Trump further stated on social media. “It was a political hijacking, and a low point in the History of our Country that such a thing could have happened, and yet, I persevered, against all odds, and WON. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Moreover, Attorney General Merrick Garland indicated he would release Smith’s report on the case soon. “As I have made clear regarding every Special Counsel who has served since I took office, I am committed to making as much of the Special Counsel’s report public as possible, consistent with legal requirements and Department policy,” Garland stated in a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md.
In other news regarding the legal battles against Trump, The American Tribune reported on comments from the president-elect’s lawyer Mike Davis, who sent a stark warning to those who had participated in the alleged lawfare. Davis said, “I’m glad the Democrats had their cathartic sentencing today, because it is going to backfire and backfire spectacularly.”
“Because right now, the Democrats think they’re the hunters, and guess what? On January 20, at noon, they’re going to become the hunted,” he added. “And I’m going to make damn sure of that as a private citizen at the Article Three Project, exercising my God-given right to speak and to lobby governments, I’m going to make God damn sure the Trump 47 Justice Department opens a criminal probe, but I’m going to make damn sure that happens. I’m going to make that my very public advocacy every day until Juan Merchan’s ass is in prison,”
