A clip from a 2019 congressional hearing shows incoming border czar Tom Homan, going head-to-head with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as she criticized his testimony on the border as being “inaccurate” and “jingoistic.” Confidently responding to the Democratic representative, Homan reminded Wasserman Schultz that he is an expert on the topic, where her knowledge of the border crisis pales in comparison.
Wasserman Schultz stated, “Mr. Chairman, before I ask my questions, since it has not yet been done, I think it’s important to really make sure that the jingoistic, bigoted testimony of Mr. Homan is called out as nearly completely untrue, as being an outrage, and as a former official directing the Immigration and Customs and former enforcement agency. He should know better.”
Homan interjected, asking the congresswoman, “What did I say that was inaccurate?” After she, Homan, and others briefly argued over each other, she continued, “So I just think it’s important that it’s not accepted as accurate testimony.” Rep. Jim Jordan then asked Homan, “Okay, Mr. Holman, is there a crisis on the border?” The former ICE director confidently responded, “Of course.”
Jordan then asked, “And has there been a crisis there for a long time?” Homan once again confirmed, “Yes.” The Ohio Republican continued, “I just want to get because your testimony was at the broader issue, and I’m with this is critically important, but we also have a broader issue there. We got unbelievable numbers we’ve seen on the border with apprehensions, everything else, right?”
“Absolutely,” Homan said, before returning to the the prior comments from Wasserman Schultz. “If I can respond to the earlier remark from Wasserman Schultz, I forgot more about this issue than you ever know. So if you say my testimony is inaccurate, it’s wrong. Everything I said here is accurate. Bottom line, if you want to go toe to toe, I’m here. I’m here in my own time to speak to the American people about what’s functional.”
Wasserman Schultz retorted, “I’m sure happy to go toe to toe with you. Mr. Homan … I’m here any day.” Homan continued, “But you got to let me respond to your question rather than dropping a bomb and running away.” Users on social media reacted to the clip offering criticisms toward Wasserman Schutlz’s approach to the hearing.
One person said, “This woman is what’s wrong with the political system!! She calls him a lair, says he is inaccurate but gives no examples or evidence and then runs and bids!” Another comment read, “Great job, Mr. Homan. The disrespect shown to you by @RepDWStweets was inexcusable. Thank goodness for witnesses like you & Congressmen like @Jim_Jordan who will allow truth to see the light of day.”
