Following Donald Trump’s monumental victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Democrats are picking up the pieces and attempting to figure out what led to Trump’s massive landslide victory in the popular vote and the electoral college. Some have pointed the finger at celebrity and liberal donor George Clooney for helping to push Joe Biden out of the race earlier this year.
After the presidential debate between Trump and Biden in late June, Clooney wrote an op-ed in the New York Times, calling for President Biden to step aside. At the time, Clooney maintained, “We are not going to win in November with this president.” He added, “This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I’ve spoken with in private.”
After the Harris-Walz campaign’s major defeat, some liberals have voiced their frustration with Clooney’s prior efforts. One person sarcastically wrote on X, Thank you George Clooney,” perhaps implying that Biden would have been a better candidate. “Someone bring me George Clooney. We need to have a talk,” another user said. “I would like to take a moment to thank George Clooney for shoving the most incompetent candidate down America’s throat to ensure a Trump victory. #MAGA,” another person stated. One user joked, “Trump should not forget to thank the Hollywood celebrities. Especially George Clooney.”
The American Tribune previously reported on statements from George Clooney. “President Biden has shown what true leadership is. He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic quest,” the actors said in a statement to CNN. “I love Joe Biden. But we need a new nominee,” he said. “As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him,” Clooney added.
Continuing to illustrated how Joe Biden isn’t the candidate he used to be, Clooney said, “was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020.” The “Ocean’s Eleven” actor noted, “He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
Following the election, some commentators have diagnosed the selection of Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’ running mate as a potential contributing factor to the loss. “Tim Walz was a bad choice of running mate; Shapiro would have carried the blue wall states,” Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich said after interviewing Lindy Li, a member of the Democratic National Committee Finance Committee and Pennsylvania Commissioner.
Li claimed, “People are wondering tonight what would have happened had Shapiro been on the ticket. And not only in terms of Pennsylvania. He’s a famously a moderate. So that would have signaled to the American people that she is not the San Francisco liberal that Trump said she was, but she went with someone actually to her left Minnesota….In the eyes of the American people, Walz was the governor who oversaw the protests.”
“She knows was a mistake was to say on The View that she couldn’t think of a single thing that she would do differently from the Biden administration,” Li continued. “That was opener for her to show Americans that she’s going to get tough on the border, that she’s going to take drastic measures to bring down inflation. That was her chance. And she knew that she maybe should have were two things differently when in the next 40 minutes, she said I would appoint a Republican to the cabinet. So she walked that back a little bit.”
